Basketball bragging rights for the next calendar year go to the Yazoo City Indians and Yazoo County Lady Panthers as both teams completed the season sweep of their rival last week.
The Indians defeated the Panthers 63-39, while the Lady Panthers were victorious with a score of 42-27.
Yazoo City’s Daveon Henry paced the Indian attack against the Panthers with a game-high 23 points. He also handed out eight assists and grabbed five rebounds.
Also notching double figures for the Indians was Tamarion Hoover, who had 18 points.
Other scorers were Caleb Crozier and Roosevelt Pittman with seven apiece, and Damarion Winston and Jacolby Little each with four.
In girls’ action, Lady Panthers Jakayla Washington and Khalee Harrison led Yazoo County in scoring with 18 and 15 points respectively.
Kamillia Jones added three and London Love, Jayla Snow and Ankaysha Henderson each had two.
Jermya Porter was the only Lady Indian to reach double figures with 12 points. E’kemii Johnson added seven, Lakyra Bankhead had four, and Akayla Hudson and Ny’Quisha Porter chipped in with two apiece.
Both the Indians and Lady Indians were coming off a pair of road wins over Vicksburg. The Indians held on for a 53-47 win while the Lady Indians won a 64-57 shootout.
Hoover led the Indians against Vicksburg with 20 points while Johnson led the Lady Indians with 27 points.
The Lady Panthers and Panthers were coming off a split against district-foe Thomas Edwards.
The Lady Panthers won 60-22 and the Panthers fell 40-38.
Yazoo City’s boys will be in action this Saturday when they travel to Pontotoc to play in the Tangle on the Trail.
They will face off against Olive Branch in a 3:45 p.m. tipoff. The Indians and Lady Indians return home on December and host Forest Hill in the final game before their respective Christmas Holiday Tournaments.
Yazoo County hosted Canton on Tuesday night and will host Crystal Springs on Friday.
