In a significant move to enhance student and staff safety, the Yazoo County School District has equipped every school, in the district, with brand new state-of-the art Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and secure AED cabinet units. Additionally, the Yazoo County High School field house has also been equipped.
This initiative ensures that every campus — from elementary to high school — is now prepared with the tools necessary to respond to sudden cardiac emergencies. The district's commitment to safety and preparedness has taken a bold step forward with this investment in lifesaving technology.
“Our top priority is the health and well-being of our students, staff, and visitors,” said Dr. Terri Rhea, Assistant Superintendent of Yazoo County School District. “Having AEDs readily accessible in each of our schools, as well as the high school field house, is a vital part of creating a safe and responsive environment. You never know when an emergency will arise, and being prepared can truly make the difference between life and death.”
The AED units are placed in clearly marked, wall-mounted cabinets in high-traffic areas within each school, making them easily accessible in the event of a cardiac emergency. Approximately seven to ten staff members have also been trained to use the devices effectively, which are designed to guide even untrained users through the process of delivering a potentially life-saving shock to the heart.
This district-wide upgrade was made possible through a grant from MS Department of Health written by Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Terri Rhea and coordinated by Mr. Joe Odum, MATS Director of YCSD.
"Having AEDs in our schools and high school field house gives us peace of mind," said Mr. Joe Odum, MATS Director for Yazoo County School District. "It shows the district is not only focused on academics but also on protecting the lives of those who walk these halls every day."
As part of the implementation, regular maintenance and training updates are scheduled to ensure the AEDs remain functional and that staff remain confident in using them if ever needed.
With this initiative now fully in place, the Yazoo County School District sets a strong example of preparedness and care for schools across Mississippi.
