Dear Editor,
Congratulations are in order to the Yazoo County Convention and Visitor's Bureau for its $25,000 contribution to the Triangle Board which will use the money for renovations and beautification efforts at the Triangle Cultural Center.
Congratulations to the City of Yazoo for its efforts to determine what is causing water leaks to the Triangle's roof. Also, congratulations to the City for its renovation of City Hall using a grant.
Congratulations to Yazoo County for the renovation of the Court House to make it handicap accessible and to install an elevator using a grant.
That brings me to the Yazoo City School District.
Superintendent Dr. Darron Edwards attended the city council meeting August 21 to present the school district budget. At the conclusion of his presentation, Mayor Delaware asked Dr. Edwards two times did he have anything to ask the Board. Both times he said, "No." What a golden opportunity missed because he didn't ask for $40,000 in free utilities so he could get the roof on the gym at the community center on college street replaced.
It's not too late.
Dr. Edwards, go to the next city council meeting and ask for some free utilities. If you are not up to the task, send Mrs. Johnson or a School Board member. If you are turned down, don't worry about it. That's life. I expect to see some new faces at the city council in April. Go back then and ask again.
Number two. I want the city school superintendent, city school board members, and city council to get more informed on the community center building. Dr. Edwards is from out of town. He needs this information. Go to the library and look at yearbooks. You will be impressed.
Number three. I think Dr. Edwards needs more supervision from the school board. I think Dr. Edwards has potential and is basically doing a good job, but nobody is perfect.
Finally, I want to inform myself as to what goes on at school board meetings. The local paper used to cover school board meetings more regularly and in depth. As time permits, I want to go and look at previous school board minutes.
I will particularly be looking for reasons why the district has allowed the gym at the community center to be destroyed. What a disgrace!
