Dear Editor,
The Aug. 17 edition of The Herald carried the obituary of a lovely lady named Sarah Martin.
She was past president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy Jefferson Davis Chapter here in Yazoo City and an honorary divisional president of UDC. She was also a past regent of the Yazoo Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a devout member of First Baptist Church, and gave 100 percent in everything she was involved in.
One morning I left my residence and headed downtown from Grand Avenue. A small dog appeared, and I was surprised so I picked him up. He looked familiar, and I thought maybe it was my son’s family dog.
I had not driven a block before I saw another small dog, and he was in the middle of the street so I stopped and picked him up. I thought maybe this was Sarah Martin’s dog.
I went to work with a dog in each arm. My son sent after his dog, and Sarah came from her beauty salon with curlers in her hair to pick up her dog. She said her gardner must have left the gate open.
She was so appreciative and praised me so much. I felt like crying.
That was Sarah Martin, and there are not enough words to describe what a wonderful person she was.
Truly,
Vay Gregory McGraw
