Dear Editor,
In my last letter to the editor, I spoke about the book written by Willie Morris, Integration and Segregation in a Deep Southern Town.
I mentioned about how I thought it is a book that all Yazoo City should read. I also said that I thought it was important because it serves well for Black History Month for both races. I still ditto those statements with a little spice to the mix.
Willie Morris' son, David Rae Morris retold the story in a documentary called “Yazoo Revisited.” Between the book and documentary I encourage the schools to present this to your students. I know this will serve them well and this community.
In this documentary we have living proof with community leaders, teachers ,doctors lawyer , merchants and the list goes on who can verify and identify the truth our children can research and talk and about. .Our children need to see and hear how this is a part of their heritage. They can be proud their parents, and leaders of this community had a part of.
The most important thing about this is we should let them know we are leaving this in their hands to carry on this legacy. I believe we did good, if you don't think so, the rest of the nation does. Willie Morris was homegrown, we have a parkway named after him.
My question is when will we start promoting our own? Our children have role models here at home. Let us show them who they are on both sides of the tracks so that they themselves can some day become that role model.
If not now, when?
