Dear Editor,
The Yazoo City Municipal School District used to own the Main Street School, which is now owned by the City of Yazoo and is our Triangle Cultural Center.
Now is the time for the Yazoo City Municipal School District to transfer ownership of the former Yazoo City Junior High School to the City of Yazoo. This building is our Yazoo City Community Complex. The complex houses the local Boys and Girls Club.
The City of Yazoo can use general obligation bonds and notes payable to restore the complex in stages, over time, for future generations. No part of this historic building should be lost, particularly the gymnasium.
I would like a committee to be formed as soon as possible to address these issues. My recommendation is that John Wallace, school board president, and Rev. Gregory Robertson, city alderman, co-chair this committee. Others I would like to see on the committee are interim superintendent Lucille Lovette, school board member Lula Starling, Alderman Aubry Brent Jr., Coach Johnny Staples, Boys & Girls Club Director Stacye Allen, school district maintenance supervisor Rodney Harris, city board attorney Sarah O’Reilly Evans and the school board attorney.
Yours truly,
Wallace Russell
