Dear Editor,
I want to begin this article by being politically correct. Wikipedia defines an idiot, dolt, dullard or (archaically) mome as a person perceived to be lacking intelligence, or someone who acts in a self-defeating or significantly counterproductive way.
Mr. Aubry Brent Jr. will be quite impressed with this, since he prides himself on his vocabulary. He will not be impressed that I think the definition should specifically name him, his cohorts and the mayor.
Am I the only one who has noticed that our political leaders are spending more time concerned about a school district that is doing better than it has done in 15 years? Can you say “Rome was not built in a day?” The school district, that we the people have allowed to fall so low, is not going to be lifted up any quicker. The total sum of money the city gives the district does not amount to an entire month’s worth of operation.
For the first time in five years, the students are excelling and morale is improving (fewer fights, scores are up, teachers are working, halls are clear, etc.). It actually feels like a real school system, and a lot of professionalism is going on. Political leaders, it “ain’t business as usual.” Just go see for yourself rather than relying on your friends to report back.
Trivia moment: Who was the administrator of Jevonne McCoy Elementary School when the current 11th grade students were third graders and had extremely low reading scores? What was Mr. Brent’s ranking among biology/science teachers when he left? The answers will follow at a later date. People, do your homework. I did. Most of our local people were in charge when this ship started sinking.
Can we account for anything else they do with our tax dollars? The very arguments that are being used concerning the school district could easily be used against them. What about the holes in the streets (that destroy my vehicle’s front end), crime (cases are rarely solved), jobs (that still aren’t here), developing a real partnership with the Federal Prison, housing (so we can draw teachers and administrators to live in town), and how about a real relationship with the Chamber of Commerce?
Few things are done properly or professionally when it comes to our political leaders. How many of you can say you had a little bit more respect for at least the preacher and the teacher? God rest his soul, but Mr. Clifton Jones should be a hero for most of us now.
I see, hear, and watch our political leaders spend an enormous amount of time on worthless things that they have no real control over. I really don’t care if any of the department heads come to your worthless, senseless meetings as long as they are getting the job done. It is very obvious that you spend two hours massaging your ego and demeaning those people in public, and then what? We the taxpayers see absolutely no difference. You know why? Y’all ain’t got a clue.
We are the laughing stock of the Delta, no Central Mississippi, no, the entire state! We would love to be known for something, but crazy should be at the end of that list. Now we know why industries aren’t coming here. Why we were worried about people staying in Yazoo City, most of the locals have to drive somewhere else to get a job. Really!
Stop distracting us with made up problems, and deal with some of our real concerns. Maybe we can see some developments when the mayor stops micromanaging; when Mr. Brent stops running for mayor and does his current job as an alderman; when he gives Mr. Varner the right answer about what’s really going on; when Rev. Robinson votes his conviction and lets the Holy Spirit really lead him without fear; and when Mr. Johnson stops following both of his uncles’ advice.
Stay tuned, I’m sure Bozo and the Clowns will not disappoint and will give us more to shake our heads about.
