Dear Editor,
I agree with the concept of bagging our leaves, but just as important is where the bagged leaves end up.
Unless there is a process in place, that I am unaware of, these bagged leaves end up in our landfills, and we all should realize that the landfills have limited future space. As the population increases, so does the need for landfill space.
I guess one of these days, our state, and other states will begin to realize this and begin a mandatory recycling effort to divert this type of waste to a more beneficial use – composting.
Preventing yard waste from entering/covering the storm drains, while mitigating street flooding, is only a beginning. I see no efforts from the city to address the issue of all the other fugitive leaves, which end up, not only along the curbs, but in our yards. It should be the responsibility of the City's Street Department to maintain the leaves along the curbs. Homeowners are learning to deal with those leaves coming from neighboring trees along the street, even if the leaves are blown in from other sources, but before the city starts tagging homes, they need to figure out what to do about that which line the streets.
Maybe The Herald can pursue this issue with the city.
