The annual Yazoo City-Yazoo County rivalry opened last week and saw the Lady Indians take a 44-31 game-one road victory.
The two teams meet again this Friday at Yazoo City.
“It’s always good when you can win the one on the road in this rivalry,” said YHS head coach Joffre Washington. “When it’s City vs. County, records go out the window. You have to be on top of your game to drown out all the noise if you want to win. It’s very exciting and pressure-packed. We were able to stick to our game plan and come away with a win.”
Yazoo City led 14-13 after one quarter of play as the sharp-shooting from Lady Panther guard Taylor Grayer kept things close.
The Lady Indians inched slightly ahead with a 9-7 second quarter and a 9-5 third quarter before outscoring the Lady Panthers 12-6 in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Seniors Lakyra Bankhead and Jer’mya Porter led Yazoo City with 21 and 11 points respectively.
Kimora Young added five, Makenzie Johnson had three, and Malia Mcpherson and Makeelah McCullum rounded out the scoring with two apiece.
Ladaisha Taylor paced Yazoo County with 12 points, followed by Grayer and Ankaysha Henderson with seven apiece, Nyaah Shaffer with four and Mashunti Demus with one.
