Terrific Teacher: longtime educator JP Luby dies

Few people have had a greater impact on lives in this community than JP Luby.

The talented teacher, who was named Mississippi’s Teacher of the Year in 1990, died Wednesday morning at age 74.

Luby, who was born Dec. 23, 1944 in Yazoo City, always seemed destined to be a teacher.

Mayor says pool party was out of control

Mayor Diane Delaware said her reservations about opening the public pool have proven to be reasonable after a recent wild party on the public property.

Delaware said Parks & Recreation allowed a group to rent the pool for a party that was totally inappropriate.

Residents seek relief from crime

Several residents appeared before the Mayor and Board of Aldermen this week seeking relief from problems ranging from cars racing down their streets, and stray dogs running wild to guns regularly being fired in their neighborhoods.

One resident, who has been in her home on Charles Street for 32 years, said she is living in fear.
