Many things have changed for Kenneth Gainwell since the last time he was on the football field at Yazoo County High School.
One thing that was noticeably the same when he returned to that field on Saturday was his big smile.
We’ve seen that smile many times over the years as we watched him use his talents to lead the Panthers to victory. We saw that same smile when he was signed to play college football at Memphis, and of course, there was plenty to smile about when he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles.
Gainwell wasn’t the only one smiling on Saturday. Over 100 local youth from talented high school players to little boys getting their first taste of football were clearly thrilled to receive instruction from an athlete they’re used to watching on television these days.
Gainwell brought along a talented group of coaches and athletes, including Gabriel Davis with the Buffalo Bills. There was a mixture of NFL and college-level athletes and coaches assisting. It was particularly exciting to see Dontrell Green, who was Gainwell’s favorite target as a high school wide receiver who is now catching passes at Mississippi Valley State, among that group of instructors.
The camp was free to all participants. Even lunch and a shirt that was later signed by the professional athletes were provided at no cost.
The group didn’t let the hot weather prevent them from getting in a day of quality football instruction. The camp helped the experienced athletes improve their skills and allowed the youngest participants to see how rewarding the game of football can be.
What may have left the most lasting impression took place off the field. That’s when Gainwell shared his story about the importance of hard work and perseverance, and how you must never lose your faith.
Kenneth Gainwell is someone Yazoo can be proud of, and this community is grateful for him for taking the time to use his positive influence to inspire the next generation of youth.
