As local school leaders continue to adjust for the upcoming school year in the middle of the COVID pandemic, both county and city districts are also preparing their proposed budgets.
Both the Mississippi Achievement School District and the Yazoo County School District are not anticipating an increase in their tax millage requests to both the city and county boards.
Dr. Ken Barron, superintendent of the county school district, said he will not be requesting a tax increase to the Yazoo County Board of Supervisors.
“We are not asking for a tax increase, and we will remain at the exact same base from last year,” he said. “Due to a $25,000 shortfall from last year, we will be asking for that money not collected from last year. But that will not affect our tax millage request.”
For the next fiscal year, the county school district has a proposed budget with a projected revenue of $18,581,690. Of that amount, 40.66 percent, or $7,554,767, is proposed to be financed through ad valorem taxes.
The Yazoo City School District will hold a public hearing on its proposed budget on Aug. 6 at 4 p.m. at its central office on Calhoun Avenue.
The city school district has a proposed budget with a projected revenue of $28,134,000. Of that amount, 12 percent, or $3,203,461, is proposed to be financed through ad valorem taxes.
