Yazoo County Sheriff Jake Sheriff has been asked to serve as interim Yazoo City police chief following the resignation of Chief Jay Winstead Monday.
Sheriff said he agreed to accept the temporary post after much prayer and consideration.
“I’m going to try to do what the Lord leads me to do, and hopefully I can help this situation,” Sheriff said. “I’m asking the community to pray for me, and I’m asking for everyone to support us.”
Sheriff will continue to serve as sheriff while also leading the police department until a permanent chief is hired.
Winstead’s resignation continues a trend of frequent change in the chief of police position in Yazoo City. The Herald has scheduled an interview with Winstead to discuss his decision to resign. More details will be forthcoming.
