Manchester Academy senior center Lanie Potter was recognized before tip-off of this past Friday’s matchup with rival Benton Academy for joining the 2,000-point scorers club. A player capable of scoring that many points in a career is undoubtedly a problem for most opponents and Potter proved that to be the case against Benton.
Scoring almost whenever and wherever she touched the ball, Potter posted a game-high 21 points in leading the undefeated Lady Mavs (14-0) to a decisive 66-22 victory over their rival.
Potter and Lizzy Carpenter got it going early against Benton, each scoring six first quarter points as Manchester whizzed out of the gates outscoring the Lady Raiders 19-4 in the opening period.
Benton’s Clara Ann Yeates scored a bucket to open the second quarter, but the Lady Mavs proceeded to go on a 16-0 run led by Potter and Karlee Martin to push their lead to 35-6 at the half.
Not giving up, the Lady Raiders continued to fight back in the third quarter led by Jewell Vandevere, however, the Lady Mavs’ lead proved to be too much to overcome. Manchester led 52-16 going into the fourth quarter and outscored Benton 14-6 in the fourth to seal the win.
Potter led a trio of Lady Maverick double figure scorers with a game-high 21 points. She also recorded a double-double with 10 rebounds and had five blocks. Carpenter chipped in with 16 points and Ivy Sowell had 11 points, five boards and four steals.
Other Lady Maverick scorers were Martin with eight, Aubrey Martin with four and Anna Griffin and Olivia Fulton with three apiece.
Vandevere was the only Lady Raider to reach double figures with 11 points (six rebounds). Yeates and Lexi Boatner added four points apiece, Alley Pingrey scored two and Chloe Warren rounded out the scoring with one.
The Lady Mavs visited Greenville Christian Tuesday night and host Porter’s Chapel on Thursday while the Lady Raiders had a pair of road games this week against Porter’s Chapel on Tuesday and St. Joe on Thursday.
