An inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution Yazoo City Medium facility died last weekend after he was found unresponsive in his cell, following "a perceived altercation," according to the Bureau of Prisons.
The BOP reports that Christopher Eric Shoemake, 53, was found unresponsive in his cell at the local federal prison last Saturday around 8:30 a.m.
"Responding employees initiated life-saving measures," the BOP report said. "Emergency Medical Services were requested while life-saving efforts continued. Mr. Shoemake was transported by EMS to a local hospital and subsequently pronounced deceased by hospital personnel."
The BOP reports that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified.
"No employees or other incarcerated individuals were injured and at no time was the public in danger," said the BOP.
Shoemake was sentenced in the Eastern District of Missouri to a 12-month, one-day sentence for a supervised release violation of Attempt to Manufacture Methamphetamine. He had been in custody at FCI Yazoo City Medium since February 26, 2025.
