A reading and math tutor is greatly needed within the Yazoo City schools, and a federal agency is determined to fill that need.
With fewer than a third of Mississippi students achieving grade-level proficiency in literacy and math, Reading Corps and Math Corps are on the hunt for 30 more tutors state-wide this fall, across four different cities, including Yazoo City.
Reading Corps and Math Corps launched in Jackson in the fall of 2021. The AmeriCorps tutoring programs place tutors at local schools to provide students with extra practice and skill-building. Tutors have already supported more than 2,800 students in reading and math across Mississippi.
Of the 30 reading and math tutors still needed statewide, Jackson and Hattiesburg comprise the largest need:
• Jackson – 15 tutors
• Hattiesburg – 10 tutors
• Belzoni – 4 tutors
• Yazoo City – 1 tutor
“We know tutoring works. Our readers reap out-sized rewards. The average kindergarten student in Reading Corps performs twice as well as their peers,” said Dr. Quentin Ransburg, executive director of Mississippi programs. “Plus, Math Corps students are two times more likely to achieve math fact fluency. We are so proud to continue to help provide this extra level of support.”
Reading and math proficiency is linked to high school graduation, college enrollment, and even lifetime earnings. Reading at grade level by third grade is an indicator of future success; students who are ready for algebra by the end of eighth grade are much more likely to excel in school and in their future careers.
In Mississippi, reading proficiency is 31 percent by third grade. Math proficiency is far behind at 18 percent.
Tutors serve on-site at local schools 35, 25 or 18-hours a week. As AmeriCorps members, tutors receive a stipend equivalent to about $15 per hour served, plus up to $3,697 to pay for college tuition or student loans. Those who are 55 or older may choose to gift their education award to their child, grandchild, stepchild or foster child. Many tutors also qualify for additional benefits like free health insurance and childcare assistance.
Reading Corps and Math Corps provide great training and ongoing coaching. No tutoring experience is required. To begin serving students in October, candidates should apply by October 4. Anyone interested is encouraged to learn more and apply at join.readingandmath.org.
