Carla White must stay on top of the latest trends and technological advancements when it comes to her role at Benton Academy. As a computer instructor, it can be challenging to learn and retain the new programs and applications surrounding technology.
But learning those new programs is what keeps the job exciting for White. It’s learning that offers the biggest reward.
“There is always something to learn,” White said. “No matter how much you know, or you think you know, there is aways something you can learn. And teaching is a great way to keep learning. It keeps our minds active. That is what is so great about teaching.”
A graduate of Benton Academy, White earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Mississippi College and later a master’s degree in technology from Mississippi State University.
“When I first started college, I thought I was going to accounting,” White said. “But once I began my studies, I realized I wanted to study mathematics.”
Beginning her teaching career at Benton High School, White was a mathematic instructor. But when the idea of becoming a certified computer instructor presented itself, she jumped onboard. For the next 27 years, she taught within the county school district.
“After I retired in 2016, I came to Benton Academy solely for computer classes,” she said. “Along with the secondary level, I also teach elementary classes one day a week. I never taught elementary before, but I decided to give it a try.”
Finding solutions is a daily part of White’s jobs. And believe it not, that is what she loves the best about her position.
“If somebody has a problem with their computers or other technological equipment, I can begin right away to see if it is something I can figure out,” White said. “If I can’t, I have to dig deeper, which helps me keep learning. I can share what I learned with the students and teachers.”
Adapting to the changing models within the digital world can be challenging.
“But that is what makes it more fun to me because there is something to learn,” White said. “It changes so much. You must stay up to date with everything to learn the new technology and equipment.”
And White admits that the students often teach her a new trick from time to time.
“They always know some little trick that you don’t know,” she said. “They can take something they have learned from one of their many applications and apply it. There is always something they know that they can teach you.”
Being a part of the Benton Academy family is all White knows. She was a graduate as was her husband and three children. Her grandson is also a student there now, and her granddaughter will be joining soon as well.
“Benton Academy has been a part of my life for most of my life, for over 40 years,” she said. “I think it is a great place. We are not perfect, but you are not going to find that anywhere. The people we have here are wonderful people with great leadership, faculty and staff.”
White is also a member of Scotland Baptist Church and enjoys spending time with her three grandchildren, expecting another one in November.
