Three shootings with injuries have been reported this week in Yazoo City with local officers following strong leads and recovering two vehicles possibly involved in two of the shootings. Investigators also believe the shootings were connected.
Interim Police Chief Capt. Patrick Jaco said the first shooting occurred around 12:14 a.m. yesterday at a Lindsey Lawn apartment. He said a 14-year-old victim inside the apartment home was struck in the foot by a projectile.
“He is stable and was transported by ambulance,” Jaco said. “Video footage of the shooting and evidence was collected by our officers and investigators, and leads are being looked into.”
Just two minutes after the Lindsey Lawn shooting, Jaco said another shooting occurred at a residence on Lamar Avenue, near Sixth Street. The second shooting was about five blocks from the previous one.
“The house was also occupied but no reported injuries,” Jaco said. “These two are believed by me and investigators to be connected and possibly the same shooter.”
Later that morning, a third shooting was reported around 3:26 a.m. at a residence on Fourteenth Street, near Jackson Avenue. Two males were also struck by projectile, Jaco said.
“One victim was struck in the back, and one victim was grazed in the head,” Jaco said. “Both subjects were taken to the local hospital and were in stable condition at the time of report. Video footage of the shooting and evidence was also collected by my officers and investigators.”
Jaco, part-time officer and juvenile officer Dustin Waford and other investigators located the vehicle they believed was involved in the Fourteenth Street shooting on Graball Freerun Road. Along with officer Danny Miller Jr., the team properly identified the vehicle, placing it in police custody for processing.
“Information and statements on the Fourteenth Street shooting and a possible suspect were gathered by detectives Miller and Demarcus Friend,” Jaco said. “All leads are being looked into at this time.”
A second vehicle fitting the description of the vehicle involved in the Lindsey Lawn shooting was also recovered by local officers.
“That vehicle was eventually reported stolen by the owner,” Jaco added. “It was recovered by investigator Friend, officer Marcus Burns and deputy Cameron Shaffer on Twelfth Street and Jackson Avenue while searching the area for subjects who fled the scene.”
As of press time, no arrests have been made. More information will be available in the next edition of The Herald.
