A habitual offender is back behind bars after being charged with several crimes that spanned over a few hours last weekend. The suspect allegedly shot two victims, assaulted a minor and threatened another victim with a handgun before being apprehended by officers within an hour of the last incident.
B’Avion Carter is charged with three counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and simple assault upon a minor.
Carter was arrested during the early morning hours last Saturday after exchanging gunfire outside a local nightclub. The shooting incident occurred about midnight in front of the Blue Diamond on Bridge Street, resulting in two victims being shot with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Chief Terry Gann.
Investigator Danny Miller Jr. said Carter’s night of criminal activity began earlier in the evening when he threatened a victim inside a vehicle.
“He jumped into a car and pointed a gun at their head,” Miller said. “From there, he went to the fair and assaulted a minor. About thirty minutes later, he was involved in the shooting on Bridge Street.”
Miller said the shooting stemmed from a feud between one of the victims and Carter that began about three weeks ago.
“This feud had been ongoing for the last three weekends,” Miller said. “The feud escalated last Saturday with gunfire being exchanged. The second victim to be struck by gunfire was an innocent bystander.”
Miller added that the nightclub where the incident occurred was not in violation of the city ordinance since the shooting occurred about midnight. The city ordinance allows nightclubs within the city to operate until 1 a.m. on the weekends, he added.
Carter was apprehended by officers about an hour after the shooting. The victims received medical care for their non-life-threatening wounds.
Miller said Carter is a habitual offender and had just been released from jail on a previous aggravated assault charge.
