The construction of a roundabout in Yazoo City on Highway 3 will begin Thursday with the project anticipated to last up to one year.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation said the project includes the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Highway 3 and the Willie Morris Parkway, where a four-way stop is currently located. The state agency added that construction will take place under normal traffic.
“Drivers are advised to slow down and pay close attention to posted signage and roadside crews for the duration of the project,” MDOT said.
The project was first announced last spring. In April of 2024, it was reported that the project will be using federal safety funds at a price tag of about $2 million dollars. Andy McNair, with MDOT, presented a Memorandum of Understanding to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen during an April 2024 board meeting.
“I was concerned about the 18-wheelers in the roundabout,” Starling said, during the 2024 meeting. “But I spoke with Commissioner Willie Simmons, and he told me this roundabout is designed to handle that.”
McNair said an easement will allow the space available to accommodate such traffic.
“The roundabout is designed to slow people down,” McNair said. “We swing people right and left as they come into that circle, and it is designed to slow people down before they actually enter the circle.”
The project timeline is slated to last up to one year as construction crews arrive this Thursday at 8 a.m.
