Some residents in rural Yazoo County may see some relief in their home insurance costs thanks to the creation of five more official fire districts.
Jack Willingham, Yazoo County emergency management director, has started the progress to create five more official fire districts within the county. He said he anticipates the entire process could take about a year to complete. But once the process is fully completed, he said the new districts could help homeowners within those areas catch a break on their home fire insurance costs.
Current official districts include Benton, Vaughan and District 3.
Willingham said the new districts will include Holly Bluff, Bentonia, Eden, Tri-Community and Midway.
“Although it doesn’t cover the entire county, people within a five-mile driving radius of those official fire stations will qualify for better fire insurance ratings, pending the creation of those official districts,” Willingham said. “The rating would be determined by the state rating bureau.”
Willingham said the current rating within those areas is 10. But the creation of the official districts could increase that rating to a 9.
“In the future, for those not covered within an official district, we could look at other ways to help with their ratings,” Willingham said. “We could create a whole other fire station or sub-stations for those populated areas not covered.”
