Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in this world. You may have experienced motherhood biologically, you may have acquired your children through adoption, you may be a godmother who has played the role of a mother, you may be a friend who has shown maternal support where it was needed. There are multitudes of women who have shown maternal love to the masses, even though there may have been no biological connection. Whatever the case, Mother’s Day is a time set aside for us to acknowledge the unyielding love given to us by our mothers.
A mother’s love is unwavering, it is an unfailing love. The first relationship that a baby has is with its mother because that relationship begins in the womb. When a mother carries a baby in her womb for nine months, God is performing a miracle in that very place. Her love begins for her baby before the baby is even born. A mother nourishes her baby through what she eats, what she drinks, and she comunicates with her baby through talking, reading, playing music, and more. Mother anxiously awaits her miracle because she wants to see and hold it; to nurture and adore it.
As we approach Mother’s Day I am reminded of growing up in church. Mother’s Day was always a special day because the sermon would commemorate the value of motherhood, the choir would sing music that was appropriate for the occasion, and mothers were out in numbers dressed to the nines in their beautiful attire and bodacious hats. So special are mothers to God that He spoke of mothers and fathers alike in the fifth commandent. Honor thy father and thy mother that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth them. If God in His Word said that fathers and mothers should be honored, then it should be so. Amen.
Mother’ Day is celebrated in more than 50 countries throughout the world. It is referred to as Mother’s Day, Mothering Day, International Women’s Day, among others. So the word MOTHER is acclaimed the world over. On May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation asking Americans to make a public expression of reverence for mothers through the celebration of Mother’s Day.
To our mothers we can say:
I thank you from the heart
For all you’ve done for me,
And I thank the Lord for giving me
The best mother there could be.
A salute and a bow to all mothers wherever you may be. May God bless you for all that you do for this world.
