It was June 5, 1967, and I had just left Oxford heading for Batesville, Mississippi. The sun had not yet made its appearance, and since I had to be in Clarksdale at seven o’clock, I was pushing the Skylark Buick pretty hard. Once in Batesville, I would pick up a truck and drive to the worksite just outside of Clarksdale.
I had been making this trip for several weeks. Everything was old about the truck I picked up with the exception of the radio. A previous employee must have liked music because this radio was tuned to every country station in north Mississippi. The reception was clear and sharp. But before the country music came on, there was a religious program that came on the air titled "The World Tomorrow." Garner Ted Armstrong was the host, and he had some interesting things to say about Biblical prophecy that I wanted to hear. At 5 o’clock every morning, he came on the radio.
This morning was different, however. Some newscaster from New York was on the air telling his listeners that the Egyptians had attacked Israel, and Israel’s chances of surviving were not good. I listened to this news cast until I finally checked in at the work site. Israel’s neighbors had plotted to drive the tiny country into the sea, and apparently, there was no help on the way - notably from the United States.
When the work day was finished, I hurried to my truck to return to Batesville. The radio was still tuned to the news, and the reporter was singing a different tune. Apparently, the Israeli Air Force had executed a surprise attack against several enemies in the Middle East and had destroyed 500 enemy war planes at a loss of only 40 of its jets.
This was the beginning of the Six Day War, a war that Israel won, but at great cost. Israel lost 700 men killed and over 2,000 were wounded. But they had won the war and captured some strategic real estate. They had defended their territory and proved for all to see that they were a very capable fighting force.
General Moshe Dayan, the general who wore a patch over his left eye, became a hero and a household name. His leadership had saved Israel from its enemies. Dayan was brilliant - and ruthless. He caught the Egyptian army exposed in the desert, and after the battle, Egypt had no further desire for hostilities. Thousand of its soldiers had surrendered.
Fast forward to modern day America. Up until last week, America had Israel’s back. If some resolution came up in the United Nations to punish Israel, America always vetoed the resolution. But that was all in the past. Barack Obama and John Kerry plotted to impose a U. N. sanction on Israel that no one in their right mind would accept. During his last few days as president, Obama has decided to take out his disdain for Israel on the only democracy in the Middle East, and make its life miserable. With this resolution passed by the U.N., Israel can be taken to the World Court, and its citizens can be prosecuted, some perhaps as war criminals.
Israel must give back the territory it captured during the Six Day War and stop building settlements on land that supposedly belong to the Palestinians. Remember, there is no Palestinian state even though there have been plenty of opportunities for the leaders of Palestine to negotiate a settlement with Israel.
Obama and Kerry have plunged the knife into Israel’s back much as Brutus did to his friend, Julius Caesar, and this resolution will be difficult, perhaps impossible, to overcome. The only hope now is for President-elect Donald Trump to cut off all funding to the United Nations after his inauguration. Without America’s support, this corrupt organization cannot exist.
It most assuredly does not exist to help America or to look out for America’s interests. As Mike Huckabee said recently, "Let’s tear the building down. New York needs the parking space." Amen, brother! Preach on!
