City leaders have started a concentrated effort to clean up the community with the recent removal of junk vehicles and moving forward with addressing 24 unkempt parcels of properties.
“I will be saying this until I just can’t say it anymore,” said Mayor David Starling. “Citizens, please help us in Yazoo City that you take pride in your property.”
Since taking office last month, Starling said one of his major projects to address within the city surrounds unkempt properties. During Monday’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting, the remaining city board showed their agreement with the approval of giving 24 property owners 30 days to clean their properties. If those property owners do not bring their parcels up to code within 30 days, the city will push forward with the proper ordinances.
Those properties include 634 W. Madison St., 701 Thomas Ave., 362 Cypress St., 407 S. Main St., 361 Cypress St., 601 Streamline Dr., 103 Charles St., 402 Maynie Ave., 1055 Rialto Rd., 129 N. Water St., 981 E. Seventh St., 723 Grand Ave., 717 E. Seventh St., 519 Monroe St., 119 E. Sixth St., 527 S. Monroe St., 437 Rudy Shields Cir., 706 W. First St., 303 Lamar, 213 Holmes St., 415 Rudy Shields Cir., 527 S. Washington St., 324 Martin Luther King Dr. and 236 N. Monroe St.
Four property owners within this week’s group of unkempt properties appeared before the city council asking for additional days to clean up their parcels. However, city leaders remained steady with the procedures, sticking to the allotted 30-day time period.
The city’s building inspection and code enforcement department, composed of Director Richard Patterson and Assistant Director Danny Neely, also began removing junk vehicles within the community.
“We want a clean city,” Neely said. “There will be no more parking on the sidewalks and no more junk cars on properties based on the orders of the city board. We will be cleaning up the city, and the city leaders have strongly expressed that to us. We try everything we can before taking action, but we will be moving those junk vehicles if the owners don’t work with us.”
