Public Works Director Robert Green said loose leaves continue to cause havoc within Yazoo City, urging citizens to consider the impact of flooding that comes along with it.
“I’ve been seeing a lot of leaves getting blown out onto the curbs and ditches,” Green said. “We just can’t keep up with them. I have seen piles all around Clubview and all down Grand Avenue. None of them are bagged up. If they don’t want to get flooded out, they need to stop doing that.”
The city council has been very vocal in their public outcry to citizens about blowing loose leaves and grass into the streets and ditches. The city of Yazoo City also has an ordinance specifically geared towards not placing leaves in bags. Warning and possible tickets could be the next step.
The city ordinance states that “it shall be unlawful for any person in the city to place, cause, permit or allow any trees, limbs, shrubs, dirt, trash, paper, grass or other waste matter or material to be placed upon any paved or improved portion of any street, sidewalk or alley or in any ditch, gutter or drainage system of the city.”
Many citizens also leave the loose leaves in large piles by the curb. However, that still poses a problem with clogging drains and ditches. Especially after a hard rain, the leaves become a problem. Bottom line, loose leaves contribute to flooding concerns within the city.
