Yazoo is grateful to the organizers of the Celebration of the Arts at the Triangle Cultural Center last weekend. We had the honor of attending the event, and it was the perfect start to what we hope will be an annual event.
There was something for everyone at the local event, including delicious food, impressive artwork, insightful literature, memorable dance performances and an incredible tribute to Louis Armstrong by Kimble Funchess and his fellow band members.
And judging by the crowd in attendance and the compliments that followed, Yazoo was hungry for it. It was so refreshing to be able to enjoy fellowship with others within the community while highlighting some of the many talents we have right here at home.
Many of us may live and work in the community, but it is always an extra bonus when we are able to gather together for community-minded events, such as the Celebration of the Arts. Not only is there exposure of some of our local talent, but the event also allowed an avenue to promote the arts within the Yazoo community. Events like these would be extremely beneficial to some of our local students, and we hope more young people who might otherwise not be exposed to the arts will be encouraged to attend.
We offer an endless amount of thanks to the event’s organizers, and we hope this is just the beginning of future events at the historical local landmark.
We also hope that the success of last week’s event reminds our newly-elected city officials of the importance of pushing restoration efforts at the Triangle Cultural Center. The previous city administration approved moving forward with over $200K worth of renovations to the center’s crumbling south wall. We hope that path continues into the future. Last weekend’s event shows the historical significance of the center to our community but also reminded us of the potential it has with future events. Lois Russell, the center’s director, has done a tremendous job in bringing life to the Triangle, and we hope support for her efforts continue as well.
The Triangle is much more than an historic building for our community. It is a place that has plenty of life left within its old bones, and we should be doing everything in our power to ensure future generations will be able to attend events such as the Celebration of the Arts in the years to come.
