The body of a Canton woman was found inside her vehicle following a one-car accident in rural Yazoo County last week. Having just turned 21 years old the day before her vehicle was discovered, Asja Griffin was pronounced dead on the scene from multi-trauma injuries.
Griffin’s vehicle was discovered by another driver who passed through the Vaughan area last Thursday. Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers said there is no way to determine what time the accident occurred.
“Another driver came by the area as the sun was coming up and noticed a flicker or reflection coming off of the car or the car window,” Shivers said. “The passerby stopped and soon discovered the vehicle off the road.”
Shivers said Griffin was the only passenger inside the vehicle.
“She left the roadway, turned sideways and T-boned a tree,” Shivers said. “She was not wearing her seat belt.”
Being a Canton resident, Shivers said he believes Griffin was traveling in rural Yazoo County via backroads to return home.
“Highway 51 has two closed bridges right now,” Shivers said. “She was probably going through Yazoo’ backroads to get back to Canton. A lot of drivers are doing that now with the two bridges out.”
The Yazoo County Sheriff's Department is investigating the cause of the crash.
