The 50th Annual Camp Sunshine has proudly concluded at Percy Quin State Park. Camp Sunshine is an event that first began in 1976 and has flourished into a beloved annual retreat offering unforgettable outdoor experiences for both the campers and the volunteers. Originally founded by a special education teacher at the Bridge Center, Becky Morgan. What began as just eight campers, has now grown to host over 100 campers of all ages for a week of summer fun at Percy Quin State Park.
Camp Sunshine was born out of a desire to create a more inclusive, less age-restrictive opportunity for special needs children and adults. Supported entirely by the Junior Auxiliary, Becky’s vision has continued on even after her passing, with leadership now carried on by Betsy Murrell as the Camp Director. Many of the original staff and volunteers are still active in hosting the camp to this day, including Becky’s daughter, Margert Ann Macloud, who serves as a “house parent,” preserving her mothers’ legacy.
Camp Sunshine offers a full week of adventures for campers and their high school and college-aged counselors. They were able to participate in swimming, fishing, games, arts and crafts, a talent show, Special Olympics, petting zoo, horse and boat rides—all enhanced this year with a festive Christmas in July theme.
“We love hosting Camp Sunshine at Percy Quin State Park every summer. Seeing the joy on the campers’ faces as they get to enjoy the great outdoors reminds us of the importance of spending time outside with friends and family. Witnessing the love and passion the staff and volunteers of Camp Sunshine have for what they do is inspiring,” says Mississippi State Parks Director, Andre Hollis.
To commemorate the 50th year of Camp Sunshine, a sign was placed on Percy Quin's Love Lock Bridge honoring the legacy of such an incredible history. Campers and volunteers were given locks engraved with the Camp Sunshine logo and were able to take part in placing those locks on the bridge.
"Camp Sunshine is an incredible example of service and love, and a true testament to this community. We knew that hitting a milestone of 50 years deserved a permanent place of recognition, and what better place to do it than the Love Lock Bridge," said Brian Ferguson, Chief of Staff of Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.
What began five decades ago has grown into a cherished tradition for individuals with special needs from across Mississippi and beyond. As the 50th year draws to a close, Camp Sunshine celebrates another successful year and remains an example of what happens when the community, compassion, and love come together.
