The qualifying deadline for the upcoming county elections has closed with a total of 54 candidates.
The total amount more than doubled during the last two weeks prior to the Feb. 1 deadline, according to the lists provided by Yazoo County Circuit Clerk Robert Coleman.
The post of sheriff has the most interest with 10 candidates vying for leadership of the county law enforcement.
The post of sheriff candidates include Noble Brooks Jr., Jeremy McCoy Sr., Cory Freeman, Simon Stubblefield, Ricky Scott and Tommy Irvine running as Democrats. Wade Zimmerman, Jason Bright and Jeff Curtis have qualified as Republicans. And Theodis Freeman has qualified as an Independent.
For Circuit Clerk, incumbent Robert Coleman has qualified as a Democrat. Erin K. Williams has qualified as an Independent.
For Chancery Clerk, incumbent Quint Carver will run as an Independent. Democrat candidates include Leticia Carmichael, Romeka Mack and Esa “Essie” Bryant.
For Tax Assessor, incumbent Denise Robertson has qualified as a Democrat. Trish Aldridge has qualified as an Independent.
For Tax Collector, incumbent Tommy Irvine will be vying for the sheriff post. Candidates Rochelle Haymer, Miranda Alexander and Marcia Arp have qualified as Democrats. Anita Pigg has qualified as an Independent.
For Coroner, incumbent Ricky Shivers and Quintrell Stewart will run as Democrats.
For Justice Court Judge, South District, incumbent Bennie K. Warrington has qualified as an Independent. Danny Neely and Terrence Jones will run as Democrats.
For Justice Court Judge, North District, incumbent Pam May has qualified as an Independent. Calvin Thomas qualified as a Democrat.
For South District Constable, incumbent Eddie Ace Smith and Charles Henderson qualified as Democrats. Pat Rush qualified as an Independent.
For North District Constable, Ceasar Felton Jr., Henry Collins Jr. and James Shiers Jr. qualified as Democrats with Sean Echols and Richard “Butch” Smith running as Republicans.
For County Prosecutor, Erica Haymer has qualified as a Democrat.
With supervisor posts:
District 1 incumbent Lee Moore and John Manor have qualified as Republicans. Mike Walton and Kent Adams have qualified as Democrats. And Joe Ashley and Lance VanDevender have qualified as Independents.
District 2 incumbent David Berry has qualified as an Independent. Kenneth O’Quinn has qualified as a Democrat.
District 3 incumbent Willie “Deuce” Wright has qualified as an Independent. Derek Jackson has qualified as a Democrat.
District 4 incumbent David Shipp has qualified as an Independent. David Peyton has qualified as a Democrat.
District 5 incumbent Cobie Collins has qualified as an Independent. Joseph Thomas Jr. has qualified as a Democrat.
Incumbent Tim Mood has qualified as an Independent for the District 2 Election Commissioner post. And incumbent Lynn McCallister has quailed as an Independent for the District 4 Election Commissioner post.
The primary election will be held on Aug. 8. A potential primary runoff election will be held on Aug. 22.
The general election will be held on Nov. 7.
