Fire damages former downtown landmark
Yazoo City firefighters contain a fire at the former Marylena Shoppe Wednesday afternoon, which knocked out power to much of the downtown area. The Yazoo landmark, located at 117 W. Broadway, clothed much of the community for several decades before closing its doors. Founded by enterprising sisters Mary and Lena Thomas on the site of their father's small grocery, the dress shop had its grand opening on November 9, 1948. The clothing store was one of the last remaining Lebanese stores in the area before it closed.
