Mavericks remain undefeated with 44-12 win over SIABy JASON PATTERSON,
Manchester Academy continued to appear unstoppable with a 44-12 homecoming win over Sharkey Issaquena Friday.
The Mavericks scored all 44 points in the first half of the contest as Manchester chalked up another decisive victory on a season where the team has started out 6-0.
Michael Williams opened the game with a gain of over 30 yards.
Two plays later Parks Poe scored on a 19-yard carry for a 6-0 lead with 8:58 to go in the first quarter.
Parks Poe recovered an onside kick immediately following his touchdown to bring the Mavericks offense back on the field on SIA’s 46 yard line.
Quarterback Upton Hitt capitalized on that good field position by connecting with Jon Riley Poe for a 31-yard touchdown pass. MA now led 12-0 with 7:31 still on the clock in the first quarter.
Dylan Dendy made a tackle in the backfield on the following drive, but SIA pulled off a pair of big plays to cut the lead to 12-6 with 6:07 left in the first quarter.
Hayes Bardwell made a tackle to stop the two-point conversion attempt.
Michael Williams had a first down run on the next drive, which was capped by Hitt connecting with Parks Poe for a 30-yard touchdown pass.
SIA decided to go for it on fourth down on their next possession, but Dylan Dendy made the stop to force a turnover on downs.
On the first play of the second quarter, Hitt completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to senior Blake Coghlan.
The Mavericks defense continued to hold strong and forced a punt. Dylan Dendy then had a big gain to set up first and goal.
A holding penalty backed the Mavericks up, but Michael Williams had a 17-yard carry to the three yard line, and Jon Riley Poe scored the three-yard touchdown for a 30-6 lead with seven minutes to go before halftime.
Jon Riley Poe then scored again on a 45-yard rush for a 36-6 lead.
Dylan Dendy added a 10-yard touchdown, and Hitt punched in the two-point conversion on a quarterback keeper for a 44-6 lead that the Mavericks took to the locker room.
The Mavericks offense played with restraint and worked to keep the clock rolling in the second half while the defense only allowed one score.
This week the Mavericks host Delta Streets. Delta Streets will enter the contest with a 4-2 record after a 44-14 win over Hebron Christian. The team’s only losses have come to Marvell Academy and Humphreys Academy, which are both teams Manchester has beaten. Delta Streets is riding the momentum of two straight wins, however.
