Mavericks earn big win over defending state champion TallulahBy CATHRYN CARTWRIGHT,
The Manchester Academy football team is still undefeated with a 5-0 record after a big 32-12 win over Tallulah Academy on Friday night. The Mavericks had not forgotten about the Trojans after falling to them in the championship game last year, so the Manchester boys had a score to settle and used the gridiron to show that this year they mean business.
Just a few minutes into the first quarter of the game, the Maverick defense dealt a hard blow when they stopped a Tallulah player who was running the ball, causing a fumble. Just when spectators thought the play was over, Parks Poe scooped up the ball and ran it 86 yards to score the first touchdown of the game, which left the Trojans stunned.
Manchester continued to dominate on the field, and by halftime the Mavericks had scored again and were holding Tallulah 12-0.
Despite multiple attempts by the Trojans, Tallulah was only able to score one touchdown and were still falling behind 18-6 at the end of the 3rd Quarter.
The Mavericks were only gaining momentum in this game, and with their supporters in the stands cheering them on, they scored another two touchdowns in the 4th quarter, allowing only one more to Tallulah, and sealed another victory for Manchester with a score of 32-12.
"We were very proud of our kids," said Coach Bryan Dendy. "They came out and played with a lot of guts, heart, and determination."
Manchester gained a total of 325 yards on offense, with 183 in passing and 142 rushing.
Parks Poe led in rushing for the Mavericks, with 7 carries for a total of 68 yards, and scored a touchdown. Jon Riley Poe also stood out with 6 carries for 52 yards and one touchdown in this game. Dylan Dendy contributed with 5 carries for 11 yards, and Upton Hitt had 2 carries for 10 yards.
Upton Hitt also stood out as Quarterback in this game throwing 5-8 for 183 yards and 2 touchdowns.
"Upton had a good night throwing the ball," Dendy said. "He managed the game well and made some great decisions."
Standing out as a receiver for the Mavericks was Ty Kilpatrick with 3 catches for 131 yards, and scoring one touchdown. Parks Poe also received well for Manchester with 1 catch for 46 yards and a touchdown, and Dylan Dendy had 1 catch for 6 yards.
On defense, Parks Poe stood out with 9 tackles, as well as the 86 yard scoop and score for a touchdown early in the game. John Riley Poe also stood out with 9 tackles, while Greyson Winstead had 6. Tyler Johnson had a great game with 3 tackles and 2 sacks on Tallulah's Quarterback, while Cade Potter had 3 tackles and a fumble recovery.
Dylan Dendy and Tyler Bardwell were both a force on defense with five tackles and a fumble recovery each. Ty Kilpatrick had 4 tackles on defense, while Matt Carroll had 3, and Staten Greenlee had one.
"We have big game this week against Delta Streets," Dendy said. "It's our first conference game. We will have to work hard this week to get prepared."
