Lady Mavericks win big in district opener

By CATHRYN CARTWRIGHT,

The Manchester Academy Lady Mavericks won their first district game on Monday, shutting out Greenville St. Joe 13-0 in four innings.

This win brings the Lady Mavs softball season record to 7-1, with their only loss being against Central Holmes last week.

Coach Robert Black said that the team simply practiced their basic softball fundamentals in preparation for their first district game.

"Pitchers need to throw strikes, fielders need to make plays, and batters need to put the ball into play," he said. "If you do that consistently enough you are going to win a lot of ball games."

Black said that the games leading up to district play are important because they give the girls experience. He added that it is the district wins that will lead them to the district tournament later on.

The Lady Mavericks began Monday night's game hot in the first inning with a double from Lanie Potter and adding 2 runs on the board.

The Manchester girls continued to rally in the second inning where they scored 6 runs thanks to excellent hits from Lanie Potter and Anna Kate Griffin.  Lizzie Carpenter also hit a double but made it home after errors from the Lady Irish defense, closing out the inning with the Manchester girls winning 8-0 over St. Joe.

The third inning brought in more runs after another double from Lizzie Carpenter.  Excellent pitching from Sydney Porter left the Lady Irish without a leg to stand on as the batters were struck out one after another.

Anna Kate Griffin also made an outstanding performance with a great catch in Center Field for the Lady Mavericks.

The Manchester girls quickly wrapped up the game in the fourth inning with bases loaded when Maci Lowery made another great hit, bringing in the winning runs, and taking home Manchester's first district win over St. Joe with a score of 13-0.

Sydney Porter earned the win by pitching a no-hitter with 6 strikeouts and allowing no runs.

On Offense Sydney Porter had one double, Lanie Potter had 2, Lizzie Carpenter had 2, and Anna Kate Griffin had one.

Lizzie Carpenter led the team in scoring runs with 3 RBIs.  Sydney Porter, Lanie Potter, Maci Lowery, and Anna Kate Griffin all had 2 RBIs each, and Presley Trammell had 1.

"It was a really good effort," Black said. "Everybody chipped in and everybody put the ball into play.  It's always nice to shut out a team but we need to remember who we are playing and that our competition is going to get better throughout the year. I was proud of the girls tonight.  With all of the things they had going on this week with school starting back and all the other activities, they found the focus to play softball for me and we won a game we were supposed to win."
