City pool to open within a week

By JAMIE PATTERSON,

Thanks to an outpouring of community support, the local swimming pool is anticipated to open within the next week.

The Yazoo Parks and Recreation Commission board members are ironing out the final details to open the pool at the Wardell Leach Recreational Complex, much to the delight of many children.

“The pool is ready, but we are finishing up final details,” said Joffre Washington, commission member. “And the kids are ready. There were about 50 of them out there recently wanting to know when the pool would open.”

The future of the swimming pool was uncertain earlier this year with the commission concerned over funding to operate it. With a tight budget, it costs anywhere from $5,000 up to $7,000 to operate the pool over the summer.

But former mayor Wardell Leach spearheading a local campaign to raise funds to ensure the pool open in time for children to be able to swim and take swimming lessons. Over the course of several weeks, enough money was raised to reach that goal.

“We would like to thank Coach Wardell Leach for spearheading this effort and all of the individual donors as well,” Washington said. “This shows what we can accomplish when we work together.”

Washington said lifeguards Richard Griffin, Damon Patterson and Melodie Patterson have worked tirelessly around the clock to get the pool ready.

“We really appreciate their efforts,” he added.

Washington admits the commission operates on a tight budget. But he said the community stepped up to the plate to ensure the swimming pool was up and operating.

“Swimming is an important recreational opportunity,” Washington said. “We thank everyone who answered the call to see that the pool opens this summer. It means so much to be able to offer this opportunity to Yazoo City and Yazoo County children.”
