Former Yazoo County football star Kenneth Gainwell has officially declared for the upcoming NFL draft.
Gainwell opted out of the 2020 football season due to COVID-19 concerns after an All-American freshman season at the University of Memphis.
As a freshman for the Tigers in 2019, Gainwell scored 16 touchdowns and had 2,069 all-purpose yards. He set freshman records for most touchdowns scored, most all-purpose yards, most rushing yards (1,459) most single-game rushing yards (209) and consecutive 100-yard games (six).
He is considered one of the highest-rated running backs entering the 2021 draft. Some football analysts have ranked Gainwell as high as number four. ESPN currently has Gainwell ranked at number six.
As a senior at Yazoo County High School Gainwell led the Panthers to the state title game, where the team lost its only game of the season. He was named The Yazoo Herald's MVP for his outstanding senior season.
