On Tuesday morning, April 6, 2021, Yazoo City resident Ketterious Grove was sentenced in the Yazoo County Courthouse to 25 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
Following a one-day trial April 1, 2021, a Yazoo County jury reached a unanimous verdict finding Grove guilty of COUNT I Aggravated Assault and COUNT II Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle.
For his crimes, Grove was sentenced COUNT I to a term of 20 years and COUNT II to a term of five years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections. COUNT II shall be served consecutive to COUNT I for a combined total of 25 years Grove was sentenced for the February 2020 incident involving a shooting at Yazoo Estates of Yazoo City.
During the incident, Grove shot multiple rounds from an assault rifle into a vehicle parked at Yazoo Estates and in which the victim was a passenger with her boyfriend and two of his friends.
Twenty-two shell casings were found at the scene where the victim suffered injuries that included being shot in her left eye, that later resulted in the loss of that organ, and loss of hearing in her left ear.
Following heart-wrenching testimony from the young victim which detailed the moments of terror as Grove shot into the vehicle and the absolute horror she felt as she ran to an apartment screaming and begging for assistance, the jury quickly reached a verdict the same afternoon following the closing statements. Prior to sentencing the victim was allowed to give an impact statement detailing how the shooting has affected her life.
Within her statement, the victim indicated that, although, her entire life was changed at the age of sixteen due to Grove’s reckless disregard for her life, she is happy with the life that God has given her and that justice has been finally served.
The presiding judge for this trial was Special Circuit Court Judge Barry Ford and acting on behalf of the state from the office of District Attorney Akillie Malone Oliver, were Assistant District Attorneys Walter Bleck and Timothy C. Howard.
