Four street projects within the city of Yazoo City, totaling about $153,000, are slated for overlaying in the near future.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved four separate overlay projects last Friday during a special call meeting. An official proposal request for these four projects will return to the city council during its regular board meeting Monday.
“It is my belief that the city of Yazoo City should continue to seek matching funds,” said Mayor Diane Delaware. “I will continue to work towards that as well as we get other individuals to support Yazoo City in the paving of its streets.”
Delta Asphalt was awarded as the best quote to complete all four street projects.
Those projects include the overlay of Jackson Avenue from Eighth Street to Twelfth Street for $49,832; the overlay of the intersection of Water Street and Jefferson Street to Broadway and from Broadway to Madison Street for $26,390; the overlay of Twelfth Street from Jackson Avenue to Grady Avenue for $26,800; and the overlay of Bridge Street from the Public Service Commission to Washington Street for $49,440.
Alderman Sir Johnathan Rucker said the city would be saving about $663,000 for all four street projects. He suggested adding those savings toward street projects.
“If we are saving this much money, we should possibly look at some other streets,” he said.
Delaware admitted the projects' costs are significantly lower than expected. But other projects were not included on the special call meeting agenda, adding that future projects need to be discussed in a later meeting.
“We are talking about subjects that have nothing to do with these motions, and we are in a special call meeting,” she said.
