GILLIE DAVIS
Gillie Edward Davis, 90, of Benton, died April 28, 2013.
Funeral services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Midway Baptist Church with Revs. Arlie Francis and Ken Wilkerson officiating. Burial will follow at Midway Baptist Cemetery under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held an hour prior to the funeral services.
Mr. Davis was born Nov. 10, 1922 in Yazoo to James Davis and Eliza Saxton. He was a retired employee of Mississippi Chemical Corporation.
He was preceded in death by his son, Steve Davis.
Survivors include his wife, Earline Davis of Benton; two sons, Norman Davis (Mary Emma) and Gordon Davis, both of Benton; daughter, Pam Thrash (Neal) of Benton;  brother, George Davis of Benton; two sisters, Geneva Hood and Marie Gordon, both of Benton; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Serving as pallbearers were Mitch Davis, Clark Davis, Tony Davis, Casey Davis, Lenden Davis and Christopher Smithart.

DOROTHY GRAYER
Dorothy Mae Green Grayer, 74, of Yazoo County, died April 23, 2013 at Courtland Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Courtland, Va.
Funeral services were held April 28 at Beulah Land M.B. Church in Yazoo City with Rev. M.C. Miller officiating. Burial followed at Cypress Garden under the direction of Scott Memorial Funeral Home.
Mrs. Grayer was born Oct. 8, 1938 in Yazoo County to the late Mr. David and Mrs. Pearl Green.  He accepted Christ at an early age at Beulah Land Missionary Baptist Church.  She attended the Yazoo City Training School. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Gracie L. Warren, Jesse James, Wiley Hatchett and Larris Ray Green.
Survivors include her husband, Mr. Willie Grayer; three daughters, Leslie Green of Jackson, Janis Grayer-Smith (Darius) of Sulfolk, Va. and Genen D. Grayer of Yazoo City; three granddaughters, Sondra and Kierra Green of Jackson, and Katrina Sykes-Manley (Darius) of Franklin, Va.; three great granddaughters, Alana J. Manley, Kennya Gene’ and Kennedi Kylan Levy; four brothers, David (Gloria), Ennis, and Robert Green all of Yazoo City, and Mr. King E. Green (Delores) of Pontiac, Mo.; two sisters, Della Smith (Joseph) and Mary A. Green of Milwaukee; and a host of family and friends.
Pallbearers were Alonzo Alexander, Wiley Green Jr., Herbert Scott Jr., Steve Gibbs and Percey Green.

OLLIE HAMPTON JR.
Ollie Hampton Jr., 70, of Yazoo City, died on April 22, 2013.
Funeral services were held April 27 at King Solomon M.B. Church with Rev. Benjamin Hall officiating. Burial followed at Cypress Garden Cemetery under the direction of Century Funeral Home.
Mr. Hampton was born Aug. 10, 1942 in Holmes County to the late Ollie Hampton Sr. and Rosie Mae Hampton. Ollie was formerly employed with Mississippi Chemical Corporation for 35 years. He was the owner of Hot City and Shady Drive Mini Mart and Restaurant.  
He accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age at Bee Lake Church in Holmes County.  In 2009 he joined King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church in Yazoo City, where he remained a member until his death.
He was preceded in death by his children, Marilyn Hampton and Shirley James of Yazoo City.
Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Gloria Jean Hampton; seven children, Ollie Hampton III of West, Abbie Johnson (Richard), Annette Hampton, Kenneth Hampton and Roderick Hampton of Yazoo City, Veronica Lewis (John) of Atlanta, and Erica Denbrock (Jeffrey) of Dayton, Ohio; two brothers, Robert Hampton (Debra) of Park Forest, Illinois, and R.C. Hampton (Cora) of Flora; two sisters, Letha Starling of Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Geraldine Green of Jackson; 22 grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers were the Deacons of King Solomon Church.  
Honorary Pallbearers were Roderick Hampton, Kenneth Hampton, Ollie Hampton III, Robert L. Hampton, Bobby Dulaney, Larry Dulaney, Chester Dulaney, and R.C. Hampton.

MARJORIE WILLIAMS
Marjorie Williams, 73, of Yazoo City, died April 29, 2013.
Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m. at First United Pentacostal Church with Rev. Lonnie Mitchell officiating. Burial will follow at Vicksburg City Cemetery under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home.
Mrs. Williams was born Oct. 28, 1939 in Natchez to Robert Brattle Boone and Ruby Pauline Wooldridge.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J.W. Williams; son, Kenny Keith Williams; grandson, Daniel Williams; and great granddaughter, Kylie Jennings.
Survivors include two sons, Billy Williams (Tonya) of Yazoo City and J.W. “Skipper” Williams (Gloria) of Talco, Texas; three daughters, Ruby Hoda (Mike) of Kiln, Pamela Spalding (Dean) of Lake Waccamaw, N.C. and Sarah Alice Willaims (Steve) of North Little Rock, Ark.; sister, Frances Simpson of Meridian; three brothers, David Boone of Vicksburg, Billy Boone of Richland and Joe Boone of Poplarville; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers will be Robbie Williams, Jason Speed, B.J. Williams, Steve Barton, Erich Boone and Colt Jennings.

LARRY CALDER
Larry Ralph Calder, 57, died April 23, 2013 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson.
Funeral services are today at 2 p.m. at Southside Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home.
Mr. Calder was born Sept. 11, 1955 in Charleston to James E. and Jewel Fly Calder. He was a representative for Advantage Sales and a member of Southside Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Diane R. Calder of Yazoo City; daughter, Danielle Threet (Darrin); granddaughter, Emma Katherin Threet of Benton; sister, Judy Little (Carson) of Charleston; brother-in-law, Clenton Ray Rogers of Yazoo City; sister-in-law, Janie Lowery; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Serving as pallbearers are Greg Little, Tony Lowery, Daryl Rushing, David Rogers, Aubry Wren and Dale Browning.
Honorary pallbearers are Shane Little, John William Fly, Jimmy Dale Fly, Jerry Melton, Aubry Johnston and David Chisolm.

JOHN MAYBERRY
John Earl Mayberry, 48, former resident of Yazoo County, died April 19, 2013 in Karlsruhe, Germany where he resided.
A memorial was held on April 27, 2013 in Madison with immediate family attending.  
Mr. Mayberry was born to the late Brady “Oakstump” Mayberry and Ethelene Andrews Mayberry. He graduated from Benton High School and then enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in Desert Storm and military duties for 12 years. He continued to reside in Germany where he was married. He was employed by Otis Elevator Company.
He was preceded in death by one brother Sylvester Mayberry.
Survivors include his son, Kevin Mayberry; two sisters, Patricia M. Brookins (Marvin) of Canton and Helen M. Carter of Flora; a brother, Brady Mayberry Jr. (Victoria) of Benton, Ms. and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and friends.

JOHN ROWE
John Howard Rowe, 84, of Tchula, died  on April 9, 2013 at  Baptist Hospital in Jackson.
Funeral services were held April 20, 2013 at Promise Land Church in Tchula with Pastor Jerry Crockett officiating. Burial followed at Jordan Cemetery under the direction of Century Funeral Home.
Mr. Rowe was born Nov. 2, 1928 in Lexington to the late Walter and Lubertha Rowe.  In his early life he did farm work and later worked for Holmes County Beat 4 under supervisor Larry Davis until his death.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Cornelius Mable Gamble; his second wife, Bessie Clinton; son, L.C.; four sisters, Mable Brown, Garnett Johnson, Mattie Mae Jones, and Ophelia Wells; and brother, Dan.
Survivors include two daughters, Tracy Rowe and Mary Sims; three sons, Demetrius Rowe, Willie Earl Hollins and Johnny Brown; stepson, James Clinton; sister, Thelma Jordan; two brothers, Walter Rowe and James Rowe; 50 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
Honorary pallbearers were his sons and grandsons.
Serving as pallbearers were Jimmy Chambers, Elijah Ollie, Terry Ward, Ted Hogan, Will Malone, and James Webb.

FREDDIE BROWN
Freddie Lee Brown, 71, of Benton, died on March 28, 2013.
Memorial services were held   on April 20, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Arokia S. Savio officiating.
Mr. Brown was born May 30, 1941 in Benton to the late John Calvin Brown Sr. and Omega Louise Brown of Yazoo County. After graduating high school from St. Francis Catholic School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served a six year tenure of military service of which he was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, Paratrooper Group.  
After his honorable discharge in 1966, he moved and settled in Washington, D.C.  He worked at the U.S. Postal Service until his acceptance as a Cadet with the District of Columbia Fire Dept.
During his extensive career, one of his many accomplishments included serving as founder of the National Association of Professional Black Fire Fighters (NAPBFF). He also served as the “Acting” Fire Chief of the D.C. Fire Department. He was a member of the Masonic Harmony #12 Lodge and also a member of the Shiner’s Mecca #10, in Washington, D.C.  
Freddie attended St. Francis Catholic Church upon his relocation to Yazoo City following his residency in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his sister, Ernestine Brown Mann.
Survivors include his brothers, John Calvin Brown Jr. (Jewel), Clarence E. Brown (Marjorie), Willie James Brown (Ruthie Mae); sister, Rose B. Hall; sons, Reginald L. Brown (Valissa), and Michael A. Brown (Chastyne); daughters, Tamika S. Smith and Tamara R. Brown; and a host of family and friends.

JOHN CHANEY
John F. Chaney Jr., 62, of Delta City, died on April 18, 2013 at King’s Daughter’s Hospital in Yazoo City.
Funeral services were held April 20, 2013 at Delta City Baptist Church with Rev. Nick Smith, Rev. Richard Davis, and Rev. Ricky Dorrell officiating. Burial followed at Vicklan Cemetery under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home.
Mr. Chaney was born in Sharkey County to Alma Louise and John F. Chaney Sr.  He was a member of Delta City Baptist Church, as well as Yazoo City Church of God of Prophecy. He was a farm manager for over 40 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Sherry Chaney of Delta City; two sons, Trey Chaney of Delta City, and Brent Chaney of Yazoo City; brother, Robby Chaney of Pearl; four sisters, Frances Luker of Delta City, Molly Shackelford of Ridgeland, Romie Ferguson of Pearl, and Lucie Chaney of Pearl;  two grandchildren, Sherrill Ann and Christopher Benjamin Chaney.
Serving as pallbearers were Tom Price, Bob Price, Reggie Williams, Shane Williams, Dee Ferguson, Patrick Garrison, Art Arrington and Jeff Rhodes.
Honorary pallbearers were M.P. Neff, Lane Boykin, and Todd Sullivan.

PEGGYE HOLLOMAN
Peggye Hogue Holloman died on Monday, April 22, 2013.
Graveside services will be at Shiloh (Bethany Primitive Baptist Church) Cemetery Friday, April 26, 2013 under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home.
Mrs. Holloman was born in Yazoo City to Mary Emma Shepherd and Steinreide Hogue. She attended Delta State University receiving a degree in Medical Technology. Mrs Holloman worked at Baptist Hospital and the VA Hospital in Jackson before moving to Decatur, Ala., where she was active as a volunteer with the American Red Cross.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Barbara Hogue, and a brother Dr. Charles Reid Hogue.
Survivors include her husband, Miles Holloman, a sister, Mrs. Betty Hogue Marsh of Madison, Ms., sister-in-law, Dorothy Hogue of Yazoo City, and numerous nieces and nephews.
After retiring, Mrs. Holloman developed a keen interest in genealogy and spent much time researching family history. In recent years she and her husband, Miles, moved back to her family home in Yazoo County where she enjoyed country living along with a large collection of animals.
Memorials may be made to the Yazoo County Cancer Society.

EWELL MALONE
Ewell Oliver “Taylor” Malone, 91, of Benton, died on April 18, 2013 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.
Funeral services were held April 20 at Midway Baptist Church with Rev. Gene Richardson officiating. Burial followed at Midway Baptist Cemetery under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home.
Mr. Malone was born June 13, 1921 in Yazoo County to I.D. Malone and Julie Burrell.  He was a retired road foreman and was also a U.S. Navy Veteran. He was a lifelong member of Midway Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Judy Ketchum; and grandson, Oliver Doyle Malone.
Survivors include his wife, Viola Luby Malone of Benton; daughter, Janice Richardson (Gene) of Kosciusko; two sons, Terry Malone (DeBe) of Madison, and David Malone of Yazoo City; sister, Christine Jones, of Gulfport; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Serving as pallbearers were Brent Richardson, Ken Ketchum, Lane Malone, Austin Malone, Brady Richardson, Breck Richardson, Adam Malone and Justin Carter.
Honorary pallbearers are Marlon John Stubblefield, Harris Ables, David Gene Ketchum, Donald Ray Ketchum, Clayton Davis, and Ronnie Davis.

THOMAS GEORGE
Thomas Nelson George, 56, of St. Louis, Missouri died April 5, 2013.
The memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at First Methodist Church in Yazoo City.  The family will receive visitors at the church from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
Thomas was born in Yazoo City on April 14, 1956. He was educated in Yazoo City and gained distinction as an effective and tenacious high school football lineman, a four-year letterman, and captain of the Manchester Mavericks. He graduated from Mississippi State University where he was actively involved in Kappa Alpha Order, establishing a broad network of friends who remained tightly linked through the intervening decades.
Thomas has been a great servant and leader on our nation's rivers for nearly forty years. He began his career with Brent Towing Company in 1974, working as a deckhand and tankerman during summers and holidays during his college career, and ultimately qualifying as a towboat pilot. He went on to apply his expertise in service to the nation as a civilian employee of the US Army Corps of Engineers for more than two decades. This included service as Assistant Master on the Dredge Burgess, the Dredge Hurley, and as both Assistant Master and Master of the Corp’s river flagship the M/V Mississippi. Most recently, Captain George served as Master of the Dredge Potter in the St. Louis District, where he worked to keep the river open for navigation through floods and historic low water seasons.
He became part of river history by serving as navigator on three Mississippi River Challenge Races from New Orleans to St. Louis, a tradition dating back to the era of paddlewheel steamboats. His teams (led by Mike Reagan, son of President Ronald Reagan, Actor Don Johnson, and Inventor Howard Arneson) always won, each time setting a new record, and ultimately cutting the time in half.
Thomas was particularly proud of his association with the Boy Scouts of America. He was an Eagle Scout (one of 4 in the family) and an inspiration to his siblings and fellows. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow (a scouting honorary), and served for several years as a teacher at BSA Camp Kickapoo near Clinton. He was a representative to Boys State, and became involved with several service and leadership organizations including the historic Order of Masons.
Survivors include his wife, Dana Lyles George, and daughter, Emma Katherine George of St. Louis, Missouri; daughter, Kayla Louise George Legons of Jackson, Tennessee; brothers, John Stevens George of Los Alamos, New Mexico, Michael Lewis George (Mabel) and Marlin Eugene George, Jr. (Alice); and nephew, Michael Lewis George Jr., all of Yazoo City; an aunt, Sara Stevens Hazard of West Point; two uncles, Gordon Hazard of West Point and George Hollister of Ridgeland; and a close extended family of 11 first cousins and their families spread over three clans.
Thomas was preceded in death by his father, Marlin Eugene George, and mother, Nelson Lovelace “Nel” Stevens George, maternal grandparents, Boswell and Sally Stevens of Macon, Mississippi, and aunts and uncles, AB Stevens Jr., Patricia Boggess Stevens and Katharine Stevens Hollister.
Memorials may be given to the Boy Scouts of America, or to other service and leadership organizations.

LEROY WHITE
Leroy White, 60, of Holly Bluff, died on April 4, 2013.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Peter Rock C.O.G.I.C. with Rev. Kenneth Ramsey officiating under the direction of Scott Memorial Funeral Home.
Mr. White was born on May 25, 1952 in Holly Bluff to Wilson and Flora Mae White.
He joined Campbellsville Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Albert Frazier. He also attended Campbellsville School and later moved to West Memphis, Ark. where he lived for 40 years.
He married Shirley White and to this union two daughters were born.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his daughters, Lisa and Stacy White of West Memphis, Ark; three sisters, Clara (James) Greenwood and Estelle (Robert) McGee of Yazoo City and Essie Mae (James) Newell of Mayersville; brothers, M.C. (Lucille) White and Eddie White of Yazoo City; three grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.
