PAULINE BOYD Pauline “Blue” Boyd, 71, of Hastings, Neb. died Thursday, May 16, 2013 at her home. Funeral services were Tuesday at Saint Mark’s Episcopal Pro-Cathedral in Hastings, Neb. with Dean Catherine F. Scott and Father Michael Houlihan officiating. Burial followed at Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Neb. under the direction of Livingston-Butler-Volland Funeral Home & Cremation Center. Mrs. Boyd was born on May 24, 1941 in Yazoo City to Gilruth and Anne (Hogue) Darrington. She attended catholic kindergarten and graduated from Yazoo City Public Schools in 1959. Blue worked at Yellowstone National Park during one summer. She graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1963 earning her degree in education; she was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. Blue taught school in Jackson. She met Jerry M. Boyd while he was on business with Tenneco Oil Company in Yazoo City. They were married on December 19, 1964; he preceded her in death on February 28, 2011. Blue and Jerry moved to Denver, Colorado where their three children were born, and then moved to Marietta, Ga. In 1977, they returned to Hastings. Blue was a substitute teacher for many years. She was a member of Saint Mark’s Episcopal Pro-Cathedral, Chapter GZ, PEO, Muggers, and Lochland Country Club. Blue delivered Meals On Wheels for many years. She loved to spend time with her family, attend grandchildren’s activities, gardening, and was an avid football fan. Blue was an educator, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerry Boyd; and a son, Steven Boyd. MARY ROGERS Mary Ann Rogers, 71, of Cabot, Ark. died Saturday, May 18, 2013. ADINE GOODWIN Adine Ketchum Hearst Goodwin, 78, died May 9, 2013 peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family, after a long two-year courageous battle with cancer. Adine loved her family and loved the outdoors. She had a great passion for travel and country music. Adine found love again when she married James "Jimmy" Goodwin in 2005. Adine resided in Benton. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bill Hearst and great granddaughter Danielle Griffin. ELIZABETH LEE Elizabeth Johnson Bradford Lee, 91, of Yazoo City died May 10, 2013, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Visitation is today at 12:30 p.m. at Stricklin-King Funeral Home. In her younger years Elizabeth transferred with her husband Brad to over 13 southern cities within Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, and finally to reside in Memphis, Tenn. where she began her career as a nurse at Shelby County Hospital. She retired after 13 plus years. After retirement she returned to her home of Yazoo City to be closer to her family. She was a very independent lady and truly a “Southern Steel Magnolia”. In 2010 at age 87 she lost her home on old Benton Road to the F4 tornado that ripped through Yazoo City while she took shelter in her hall closet. Afterward, she gathered the few precious pieces which remained and started over. She had a strong pioneer spirit. She was a long time member of Southside Baptist Church on Monroe Avenue. She had a special love for all her family, especially those great-nieces and nephews. Decorating her home and working on arts and craft projects kept her busy in her later years. Everyone knew her favorite color was red. He was educated in the Yazoo City Public Schools and graduated from Yazoo City Training School in 1963. He then graduated from Stillman College. He was baptized at Tulane M.B. Church at an early age by Rev. George D. Daniels. He began his career as a history teacher in 1968 at Yazoo City Junior High, where he also coached the girls’ basketball team. In 1977, Yazoo City opened the new high school, and he was selected as the new head coach for the Indianettes. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Martha Mitchell; foster parents, Jack and Elizabeth Wedlaw; and special parent, Margaret Campbell. Mr. Ellett was born June 26, 1961 in Vicksburg to Robert Herron Ellett and Clara Wadford. Survivors include two brothers, James Randy Ellett and Robert Ellett (Angela), both of Yazoo City; and three sisters, Clara McNamara (Michael) of Jackson and Ester Martin (Jimmy) and Sharon Stevens (Charlie), both of Yazoo City.
ROMAN HENDERSON Roman Earl Henderson, 93, died May 5, 2013 at the Veteran’s Home in Jackson. Funeral Ssrvices will be held today at Shaffer and Collins Funeral Chapel with Rev. Charles Townsend officiating. Burial will follow at Glenwood Cemetery under the direction of Shaffer and Collins Funeral Home. Mr. Henderson was born Aug. 30, 1919 to Warren Avery Henderson and Mattie Romans Henderson. He was an interior decorator and carpenter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtree Roberts and his eight siblings. Survivors include his daughter, Linda Hill of West Columbia, S.C.; two grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
LESLIE MONDAY Leslie Parshan Monday, 59, of Benton died May 1, 2013. Funeral services were Sunday at Trinity Pentecostal Church of God with Rev. Terrel Veazey officiating. Mrs. Monday was born May 17, 1953 in Houston, Texas to Lester Gould and Mable Vancleave. She was a member of Trinity Pentecostal Church of God in Yazoo City. She was preceded in death by her father, Lester Gould; a brother, Carlton Perry Gould; three sisters, Patrica Bennett, Bertha Shondell Gould and Bertha Yvonne Gould. Survivors include her mother, Mable Vancleave; husband, Reuben Monday; two daughters, Amanda Warren (Rodger) and Sheila Rusche (Marcus); a stepson, Dag Monday (Emily); four grandchildren, Angela Massey (Clint), Shelby Warren, Joshua Jennings and Courtney Jennings; two brothers, Lester Gould and Benjamin Gould; and a host of nieces and nephews.
MELVIN WELDON Melvin Wayne Weldon, 58, of Bentonia, died May 7, 2013. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Mr. Weldon was born Aug. 11, 1954 in Yazoo County to Max Weldon and Laura Warrington. He was a retired Navy veteran and was employed with Sadler Granite Works. Survivors include his four daughters, Keshia Ann Weldon of Justin, Texas, Laura Weldon of Grapevine, Texas, Janice Cooper of Winter Park, Fla., and Jennifer Miller of St. Cloud, Fla.; mother, Laura Hawk of Yazoo City; three brothers, George Weldon of Texas, Louis Weldon of Yazoo City, and Thomas Hawk of Bentonia; six grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
