LARRY GILES Larry Darnell Giles, 61, of Yazoo City, died on April 26, 2013. Funeral services were held on May 3, 2013 at Antioch M.B. Church with Rev. Steve Dennis officiating under the direction of Century Funeral Home. Mr. Giles was born on Aug. 14, 1951 in Yazoo City to Sammie Giles Sr. and Will Ella Gibbs Giles. He attended Yazoo City Training School and N.D. Taylor High School, graduating in 1969. He confessed Christ at an early age at St. Peter M.B. Church. He was elected in 1979 as the Justice of the Peace for District 3 of Yazoo County, which he served for one term. He was preceded in death by his father. ADINE GOODWIN Adine Ketchum Hearst Goodwin, 78, died May 9, 2013 peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family, after a long two-year courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services were Saturday at Stricklin-King Funeral Home. Burial followed at Benton Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Goodwin was born May 10, 1934 in Yazoo County. Adine loved her family and loved the outdoors. She had a great passion for travel and country music. She was an active member at Benton Baptist Church and instilled a love of the Lord throughout her family. She was the proud mother of four daughters and two step sons. Adine found love again when she married James "Jimmy" Goodwin in 2005. Adine resided in Benton. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bill Hearst and great granddaughter Danielle Griffin. She was also preceded in death by her parents Santie and Buck Ketchum. ELIZABETH LEE Elizabeth Johnson Bradford Lee, 91, of Yazoo City died May 10, 2013, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland. Visitation is today at 12:30 p.m. at Stricklin-King Funeral Home. There will be special music by nephew Jamie Isonhood and great-niece Savannah Isonhood. Mrs. Lee was born April 29, 1922, in the local community of Pea Ridge. In her younger years Elizabeth transferred with her husband Brad to over 13 southern cities within Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, and finally to reside in Memphis, Tenn. where she began her career as a nurse at Shelby County Hospital. She retired after 13 plus years. After retirement she returned to her home of Yazoo City to be closer to her family. She was a very independent lady and truly a “Southern Steel Magnolia”. In 2010 at age 87 she lost her home on old Benton Road to the F4 tornado that ripped through Yazoo City while she took shelter in her hall closet. Afterward, she gathered the few precious pieces which remained and started over. She had a strong pioneer spirit. She was a long time member of Southside Baptist Church on Monroe Avenue. She had a special love for all her family, especially those great-nieces and nephews. Decorating her home and working on arts and craft projects kept her busy in her later years. Everyone knew her favorite color was red. WILLIE WASHINGTON JR. Willie Lee Washington Jr., 69, of Yazoo City, died on May 5, 2013. Funeral services were held May 10 at Tulane M.B. Church with Pastor Gilbert Andrews officiating. Burial followed at Cypress Garden Cemetery under the direction of Century Funeral Home. Mr. Washington was born on Aug. 20, 1943 in Yazoo City to the late Willie Sr. and Lovie Washington. He was educated in the Yazoo City Public Schools and graduated from Yazoo City Training School in 1963. He then graduated from Stillman College. He was baptized at Tulane M.B. Church at an early age by Rev. George D. Daniels. He began his career as a history teacher in 1968 at Yazoo City Junior High, where he also coached the girls’ basketball team. In 1977, Yazoo City opened the new high school, and he was selected as the new head coach for the Indianettes. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Martha Mitchell; foster parents, Jack and Elizabeth Wedlaw; and special parent, Margaret Campbell. MOLLIE STOCK Mollie Cary Dent Stock, 53, of Greenville died May 4, 2013 after a long a valiant battle with cancer. Funeral services were Tuesday at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Greenville. Burial followed at Glenwood Cemetery in Yazoo City. Mrs. Stock was born on May 5, 1959 to Amanda Cary Dent and John Hayes Dent. Mollie was the oldest of three children, along with two brothers, John Hayes Dent, Jr. and Richard Hughes Dent. Mollie graduated from Yazoo City High School in 1977 and followed in her mother’s footsteps by attending and graduating from Mississippi State University for Women in 1980. She married in 1979 and gave birth to three wonderful children, William Stokes Jones, John Montfort Jones and Margaret Amanda Jones. Mollie grew up in Yazoo City, but during her married life she lived in several towns in the south and central Delta. During her latter years she made her home in Greenville, a place she loved and where she had many friends and admirers. Mollie loved flowers and decorating. She was a member of The Greenville Garden Club, during which time she served as president and represented the club at Garden Club of America meetings throughout the country. She was a popular floral artist throughout the Delta and around the state. As a high school student, Mollie served twice in the nation’s capital as Page for then Congressman, G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery. Among the honors Mollie received during her lifetime were Yazoo County Miss Hospitality, Vice-President of Delta Council and was selected as Good Middling Lady by the Delta Council. One of her most cherished relationships was her membership at Covenant Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Greenville. Her Covenant church family was very important to her and she was always grateful that her children had the opportunity to grow up among those church family friends. Mollie never waivered in her faith in Christ as her Savior and Lord of her life. It was that faith that carried her through difficult times and kept her focused on her belief that God is good and all that He does is good. Mollie will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her father, John Hayes Dent, Sr. as well as her children, William Stokes Jones and Margaret Amanda Jones. Survivors include her son, John Montfort Jones; her mother, Amanda Cary Dent Bailey and her father of 46 years, Robert Bailey; her brother, John Hayes Dent, Jr. and sister-in-love, Carolyn Dent, and brother, Richard Hughes Dent. CECELIA THOMAS Cecelia Thomas, of Yazoo City, 86, died May 3, 2013. Funeral services were Tuesday at Glenwood Cemetery. Burial followed under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. James T. Thomas, and her brother, Franklin Lewis. At the time of her death, Cecelia resided at The Blake in Ridgeland. Cecelia was born in Satartia on August 9, 1926. She attended the University of Mississippi where she was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority. She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Yazoo City, Mississippi. Cecelia was also a member of the Yazoo City Country Club. Cecelia and Dr. Thomas had a passion for flying and enjoyed flying their Mooney airplane throughout the Southeast. Cecelia was so devoted to flying that she took lessons and soloed in their plane. Cecelia was also an accomplished artist and enjoyed painting landscapes in her pastime. Survivors include her sister, Julia Lewis Rowan, her niece, Diane Rowan Drake and her nephew, Dr. Randal K. Rowan, all of Atlanta, Ga.
LINDA WALTERS Linda Sue Landrum Walters, 65, of Yazoo City died April 28, 2013 at King’s Daughter’s Hospital in Yazoo City. Funeral services were held May 3, 2013 at Bentonia Baptist Church with Pastor D.J. Speckner officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Olivet Cemetery under the direction of Scott Memorial Funeral Home. Mrs. Walters was born March 14, 1948 in Rosedale to Archie and Bessie Cox Landrum. She was preceded in death by one brother, Travis Murphy Landrum; and two sisters, Betty Jean Taylor and Mary Lousie Pugh. Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Maziogo (Bobby), Susan Bush (Mike), both of Ellisville, and Jennifer Moore (Shane) of Taylorsville; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; four brothers, Archie Landrum Jr., Henry Landrum (Gina) Jerry Landrum (Debbie), and Roy Landrum (Annette); three sisters, Shirely Kent, etc.; and a host of family and friends. WILLIAM BAKER William Baynham Baker, 65, of Benton died Tuesday April 30, 2013 at The University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Funeral services were Thursday at the Stricklin-King Funeral Home Chapel. He was a member of Benton Baptist Church and before retiring was Director of Transportation Distribution for Georgia Gulf in Gluckstadt. Survivors are his wife; Glo Eckert Baker, mother-in-law Elizabeth Eckert of Benton. cousins; Joe Dale Hartness, Presley Hill, Mary Glass, David Stockstill, and Danny Stockstill, brother-in-law James (Marcia) Eckert of Benton, sisters-in-law Emma Eckert Reed of Douglasville, GA., and Betty Eckert (Ken) Bagwell of Dawsonville, GA., nieces; Ashley Reed Mella, Kara Bagwell Hewatt, and Kristen Eckert Moreno, nephews; Sean Reed, Heath Eckert, and Blake Eckert, who are heading to Yazoo soon to celebrate a life well lived by their Uncle Baynham. And boy did he live a life worth living. He has touched so many by sharing his life experiences. Although he was not a man of many words over the past few years, not by choice but by circumstance, he taught us so many things. I cannot look at a National Geographic or watch The History Channel without thinking of him. He taught me to play poker and beat the best of them at spades. In our family, he was "The Most Interesting Man in The World." He will be missed by many and remembered by many more. CLYDE SEAWRIGHT Clyde L. Seawright, 82, of Bentonia died Tuesday April 30, 2013 at Meadows-Fulton Nursing Home. Funeral services are today at 11 a.m. at the Stricklin-King Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Bentonia Baptist Cemetery. He was a retired machinist with AMCO Manufacturing of Yazoo City and a Baptist. He was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie C. Seawright, grandson Ryan Seawright, 3 brothers and one sister. Survivors are his sons; William M. (Norma) Seawright of Flora, Leonard Carter (Martha) Seawright of Tupelo, Stephen C. Seawright of Bentonia, and Joe Frank (Connie) Seawright of Benton, 7 grandchildren, Angel (Bert) Gregory, Candace (Mark) Pomeroy, Michael Stephen, Jonathan (Julie) Seawright, Corey Seawright, Trevor Seawright, and Russell Seawright, 11 great grandchildren, sisters; Ann (Jimmy) Creswell, Janice (Bud) Adams both of Bentonia, and Beverly Whitehead of Florence.
