Miss Magnolia State-West

Marquita Maria Powell is an 18-year-old senior at Yazoo City High School. She is the daughter of Matthew and Alice Powell. Marquita participated in the Miss Magnolia Pageant at Delta State University on Mar. 23, 2013. She won the title of Miss Magnolia State-West. Locals graduate from military training

Air National Guard Airman 1st Class DeVirris J. Powell graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.
Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
DeVirris is the son of Angela Granderson of Dover Road, Bentonia.
He is a 2005 graduate of Yazoo City High School.
Army National Guard Pvt. DeJarveon D. Moore has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
Moore is the son of Antionette Carter and grandson of Priscila Carter of Easy Street, Yazoo City.
He is a 2011 graduate of Yazoo City High School.

 

Miss Coleman to wed Jones on April 20

Miss Katrina Coleman and Spencer JonesMiss Katrina Coleman and Spencer JonesJames and Rhonda Coleman of Natchez are proud to announce the engagement of their daughter, Katrina Coleman, to Spencer Jones, son of Eddie and Dorothy Jones of Bentonia.
The bride elect attended Natchez High School, the University of Southern Mississippi, and William Carey University. She graduated with a Bachelors Degree of Education from Southern Miss, and a Masters Degree of Education from William Carey. She currently teaches fifth grade at Jackson Public School.
The prospective bridegroom graduated from Yazoo County High School, as well as University of Southern Mississippi. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science while at Southern Miss. He is currently the Director of Development with Mississippi Interactive.
The couple will exchange vows on April 20, 2013 at Rose Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Natchez with a reception to follow at Vidalia Convention Center.  
Family and friends of the couple are welcome to attend.

 

Miss Roberts to wed Jones on May 25

Miss Sara Roberts and Robert Jones IVMiss Sara Roberts and Robert Jones IVKathy and the late Martin Roberts of Benton are proud to announce the engagement of their daughter, Sara Marie Roberts, to Robert Leon Jones IV, son of Bobby and Kay Jones of Waynesboro.
The bride elect is the granddaughter of Donna and the late Stanford Pepper, and the late Wiley and Hattie Roberts.
Miss Roberts is a Benton Academy graduate and a University of Mississippi graduate. She graduated from Ole Miss with a Bachelors of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences. She will officially become a Doctor of Pharmacy by May of this year. She is currently a Pharmacy resident at Huntsville Hospital.
The prospective bridegroom is the grandson of Robert and Jeanette Jones, and Mrs. Azaline Bonner and the late Pete Bonner.
Mr. Roberts attended Jones County Jr. College, Meridian Community College, and the University of Southern Mississippi.  He earned his Associates in Science at Jones, his Associates of Nursing at Meridian, and his Bachelors of Science in Nursing at the University of Southern Mississippi. He is currently an RN in the Neuroscience ICU at University Medical Center.
The couple will exchange vows May 25, 2013 at Benton United Methodist Church. Rev. Chip Henderson will be officiating their double ring ceremony.  
Reception will follow at the Manchester in Yazoo City.

 

Hudson to attend conference

Wayne Hudson Jr., son of Wayne and Minnie Hudson of Yazoo City, will be attending the Global Young Leaders Conference in New York City and Washington D.C. on July 1-13, 2013.
While Wayne has been introduced to his unique qualifications and abilities and given guidance on how to apply those skills at home and in school at the National Young Leaders Conference, the Global Young Leaders Conference raises his leadership experience to a higher level.
During this conference he will visit international embassies, evaluate nation’s interdependency in world trade, and study the art of Conflict Resolutions. He will engage with United Nations Speaker, draft policy proposals. These sessions will be held at the United Nations Headquarters.
Wayne pays tribute to his past teachers, Mrs. Rosemary Wilson, Mrs. Annie Burney, and Mrs. Tijuana M. Thompson, who were excellent teachers who saw great potential in him at an early age.
