Members of the King’s Daughters Hospital Auxiliary Volunteers remind the community that the annual Lights of Love campaign is underway in Yazoo County during the month of December. The yearly event is conducted to raise funds for the purchase of medical equipment, supplies and other needed items at the local King’s Daughters Hospital. Again this year, memorial and honor boards will be located on the hospital grounds. For a minimum contribution of $5, a name will be written on the appropriate board, called the Book of Remembrance. If desired, a gift notification card will be sent to the person honored or to the family of the deceased person being remembered. Contributions to the Lights of Love can be mailed to the chairman, Linda Jenkins, at 720 N. Sunset Dr., Yazoo City, MS 39194, or left at the Information window at the hospital. The campaign, coordinated by the Auxiliary Volunteers, has helped raise thousands of dollars for the purchase of equipment and supplies for our community’s only hospital. “Every penny collected through Lights of Love benefits the citizens of our community,” Jenkins said. “The generous donations from our friends and supporters are returned to the community through upgrades to our hospital.”

Rev. Steve Dennis rehearses with local choir members for the fifth annual Christmas Cantata to be held on Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Triangle.Special to The Herald
Members of the Oakes African-American Cultural Center Community Choir are busy preparing for its annual Christmas Cantata. Rehearsals have been underway for the fifth annual cantata, scheduled for Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Triangle Cultural Center. All proceeds go towards the maintenance and upkeep of the Oakes African-American Cultural Center Museum. The cantata will feature performers from area churches. This year’s program is under the direction of Rev. Steve Dennis and Joe Henry Smith. Last year’s audience was again treated to a beautiful medley of Christmas carols provided by choir members from local churches. This year’s cantata, Behold Emmanuel: Love is With Us, is shaping up to be even more entertaining that the previous four musical events. Thanks to the efforts of the Oakes Advisory Committee, this year’s Christmas musical event at the Triangle promises to bring in a larger audience than that of the four previous years. Several former Yazooans travel from Jackson and other surrounding areas to participate in the event. They look forward to making the trip to Yazoo City and lending their voices to the chorus in an effort to entertain and raise funds for the Oakes House. Tickets for the Cantata are $4 and may be purchased at the door or from members of the Yazoo County Fair and Civic League Inc. Warm apple cider along with other light refreshments will be served following the program. For more information, call Rev. Rachel Pitts, Joe Henry Smith or the Yazoo County Fair and Civic League office at 746-7984.
