Local members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha recently participated in a variety of events within the Yazoo community.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. is the first inter-collegiate Greek-letter sorority established for and incorporated by black women.  Since its founding on the Howard University campus, January 15, 1908, the organization has had a tremendous impact, empowering communities through service initiatives and progressive programs.  
General members of the Yazoo City area, and undergraduate members from Gamma Phi chapter of Alcorn State University, joined Upsilon Upsilon Omega graduate chapter  of Alpha Kappa Alpha in worship service at Tulane Baptist Church in Yazoo City on Jan. 20.  
On this day, the members celebrated 105 years of sisterhood and service in addition to participating in the Martin Luther King Jr. program.  
The theme of program was A Day of Service Moving Forward in Unity. The “A Day On, Not Off MLK/Founders’ Day Service Project” was to prepare a winter survival kit for Yazoo City Head Start Fouche Center.
Asthma Prevention and Management to benefit children and families enrolled in Head Start programs is a Health Initiative under the sorority goals for Global Leadership Through Timeless Service.  
According to the American Lung Association, respiratory infections, such as a cold, flu, or sinus infection, are the most common cause of asthma symptoms leading to an asthma flare-up. Because children under six years touch their noses, eyes and mouths often, put things in their mouths, and touch each other often during play, cold germs spread easily.
A Winter Survival Kit will help to sanitize and disinfect for germs and common virus.
Members of Upsilon Upsilon Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in conjunction with Hinds Community College Para-Legal Technology Club donated liquid soap, hand sanitizer, Kleenex or other facial tissue, Band-Aids, Lysol or other disinfecting spray, Wet Ones or other wipes, Neosporin or other anti-bacterial cream, and gloves.  
The Yazoo City General members of Alpha Kappa Alpha donated a $50 check to Mississippi Action for Progress for the Fouche Head Start Center.   
A follow-up activity was conducted through a collaboration with the Mississippi Department of Health providing asthma management and treatment brochures and Yazoo City Municipal School District conducting a workshop the following Wednesday during lunch  at the Fouche Head Start Center to inform parents of asthma triggers, preventions and treatments.

Heather Griffin of Yazoo City has earned the title of Credential Director by the Mississippi Department of Human Services, Division of Early Childhood Care and Development.
By showing proficiency in topics such as child development, program administration and financial management, Griffin completed the 135-hour Mississippi Directors’ Credential Program. This course of study for best practices in child care administration is offered through the Mississippi Child Care Resource and Referral Network, a program of the Mississippi State University Extension Service.

Darienesha Deloris McCoy, daughter of Darien and Lakeshia McCoy, will celebrate her second birthday on Feb. 3.
She will celebrate her birthday with a Hello Kitty party on Feb. 2 with a Chucky Cheese party on Feb. 3.
Maternal grandparents are the late Sandra Martin and the late Walter Howard.
Paternal grandparents are Minnie McCoy and the late Otis Love.
Joining in the celebration are sister Doukerria and brothers Jacodie and Darien.
