John Blackledge Sports EditorWell, it’s the time of the year where one minute its 30 degrees outside and 70 degrees the next day.
Yep, its spring time in Mississippi. Honestly, the weather this time of the year is terrible on one’s allergies. However, its one of the busiest times of the year in the world of sports.
On the local realm of things, there is a little local flavor in the “Big House.” I’m not talking about Whitfield, folks. I’m talking about the state championships in Jackson.
Former Yazoo City and County basketball assistant Anthony Carlyle will be coaching Velma Jackson against Booneville Friday. Our man Joffre Washington did a great job on a story featuring both Archie and Anthony Carlyle.
How cool would that be if Anthony gets the job done?
So far through the tournament, the North has a big advantage in the overall wins in the state tournament at 18-5. That speaks volumes of how much better basketball is in the north part of the state.
Tournaments
Galore
Several teams will be in local tournaments here in town and on the road this week during Spring Break. Manchester Academy will be hosting a tournament including Benton Academy.
There are few good teams that will be taking a part of the two day tournament. It should make some for some quality baseball, so go out there and support the kids.
Yazoo City will head south next week to Ridgeland for their spring break tournament. I’m sure Gerald Peyton will have his bunch ready. The Yazoo County Panthers will be heading over to Port Gibson Saturday. They will also host them Friday night at Panther field.
Baseball In Mississippi
Mississippi State is hot right now.. The Bulldogs are on a current 16 win streak heading into a weekend series against Central Arkansas. I know the Dogs have played every game at Dudy-Noble, but hey it is what it is.
They are sporting a #3 ranking behind North Carolina and Vanderbilt. State will face Southern Miss at Trustmark Park Tuesday night in Pearl. Should make for a good game.
My prediction Mississippi State 6, Southern Miss 2.
Ole Miss is still in the top 10, according to Baseball America.
For all you Ole Miss fans out there, the TCU Horned Frogs sweep wasn’t that big of deal now because they are 3-8 overall.
Baseball is long, so we will find out how everything plays out for sure in the long haul of the season.
