Davis throws no-no, Indians get division win in local prep baseball action

The Yazoo City Indians knocked off the Starkville Yellowjackets 2-1 in division play Friday night. Darius Wright struck out seven in the division win. Indian manager Gerald Peyton was pleased with the win.
“We finally played our best defensive ball game of the year,” Peyton said. “We had some timely hits that helped us pull away with the win. I’m proud of our guys for stepping up to the plate.”
Willie Harris hit a double and Ralph Jones hit the game winning RBI single to give the Indians the win.
Peyton feels confident in his team’s upcoming series against Canton.
“We have played tough competition all year long,” Peyton said. “I feel strong like we can take two from Canton if we play like I know we are capable of playing.”
Wright earned the win from the mound in the Indians win.

Ellis named Coach of the Year

Panther baseball coach Corbin Ellis was chosen as the 2012 Coach of the Year for Yazoo County. The Benton Raiders kept its winning ways alive Tuesday evening at home against rival Canton Panthers 7-6.  The Raiders spotted the Panthers an early four runs to start the game in the first.
Jacob Davis hit a RBI sacrifice to get the Raiders on the board. Jason Berry got hit by pitch to earn a RBI. Berry later scored on a Panther error to pull the Raiders within one at 4-3.

Manchester Academy competed in the Manchester Invitational at the Yazoo Country Club Tuesday morning. The Maverick golf team edged out Canton 326 to 332 to come away with the championship.
Maverick head coach Clark Liddon was pleased with his team's performance.
