City’s playoff hopes vanish with one-point loss

The Yazoo City Indians (6-4) began the season by putting up a strong front against the first four teams the squad matched up against. Coming right out of the gates, playing some competitive clubs, the Indians showed immediate marked improvement from 2010, winning their first four games.
The last six outings have not produced as good of results in the win-loss column, but the Indians have remained competitive, and they know going into the final week, they will not have a losing campaign in 2011.
“We knew this 5A ball was going to be tough,” said Yazoo City High School head coach Tony Woolfolk. “We were in the Neshoba game, we were in the Provine game, and we were in the Ridgeland game. We could easily be 9-1 if the ball bounces our way.”
That competitive edge was manifested once again, last Friday night, when the Indians squared off against the Ridgeland Titans at home. The chilly temperatures could not cool down the Ridgeland club, which barely squeaked out a 21-20 win over the Indians.

For the past three months, football has captivated the attention of the sporting world. However, as October comes to a close, so is the regular season for high school football.
As one sport comes to a close, another is just beginning.
This week, local basketball teams will make their final preparations for the regular season with a pair of preseason tournaments set to begin this week.
The first will feature the Manchester and Benton Academies girls basketball teams at the Preseason Canton Tournament. The other is the annual Yazoo County Classic, featuring teams from Yazoo City and Yazoo County High Schools.
Action in Canton will begin this Monday and will last throughout the week. The tournament is an excellent tune-up opportunity for the Lady Mavs and Lady Raiders as their seasons officially begin the following week. Benton opens it season against Deer Creek at home on Nov. 7, while Manchester begins play Nov.8 against East Rankin.
The Yazoo County Classic is scheduled to begin next Saturday, Nov. 6, and will last _ days. The tournament will feature both boys and girls teams from local high schools.

Never give up on your team

Taylor Mitchell Sports EditorTaylor Mitchell Sports EditorIn sports, all that matters is winning.
Sure, stats are important and usually lead to wins, but having a quarterback throw for 10,000 yards in one season (with today’s evolution of the forward pass, it could happen) won’t save a coach’s job after an 0-10 season.
No matter what anyone tells you, winning is the bottom line.
The ultimate win is a championship and, unfortunately, it’s been a while since a Yazoo football squad hoisted the golden trophy in Jackson.
Have no fear sports fans. Your time will eventually come.
I spent 20 years of my life as a fan of the Dallas Mavericks and Texas Rangers and for most of those years they weren’t very good.
Sure, the Mavs and Rangers each had a good season here and there, but even Ole Miss and Mississippi State accidentally have good seasons.
So can you imagine how it feels to be a person who grew up 15 minutes from where the Rangers (and now Cowboys) play their home games? And another 30 minutes from the Mavericks home stadium?
I’ll tell you. It’s awesome.
Five months ago, the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Miami Heat to win their first NBA championship and now, the Rangers are one win away from their first World Series title (as I write this Thursday morning before game six).
I was ecstatic last year the Rangers made it to World Series. So much so that I declared if the Rangers were to win the series, I’d get a tattoo to commemorate their victory. This year, I’m just as excited, sitting on the edge of my couch as Derek Holland pitches one of the best games of the post season  or when Texas comes to bat down a run.
I’m yelling at the TV and clapping my hands as if I’m at the game myself - something I rarely do.
The Rangers haven’t won a World Series in their 51-year history and the Mavs had gone 30 years without winning a NBA title.
So, my message is this. Even if your team isn’t very good, stick with them. Eventually, they’ll reward your faith.
