MDWFP Youth Waterfowl Hunting and Education Camp Announced

Special to The Herald

Jackson – MDWFP is once again hosting the MDWFP Youth Waterfowl Hunting and Education Camp.  The camp’s mission is to recruit and retain waterfowl hunters and increase support forwetland conservation and waterfowl hunting in Mississippi.  The camp is much more than a youth waterfowl hunting trip.  During the camp, youth ages 13-16 will increase their knowledge of waterfowl and wetland biology and management.  Classroom discussions and hands-on exercises will be led by MDWFP biologists to help students gain a better understanding of wetlands, waterfowl, and ethical hunting practices.  In addition, local field trips to public and privately managed wetlands will expose youth to the diversity of habitats that waterfowl use in Mississippi.  The camp will conclude with an optional adult-supervised waterfowl hunt for youth aged 13-15 years old.
The camp will be held in theMississippi Delta on a hunting club in Quitman County from February 2-5, 2012.  Youth ages 13-16 are encouraged to apply, however, only those youth less than 16 years old will be eligible for the hunt at the camp’s conclusion.  Because of limited space, only 15 youth will be selected for the camp.  To apply for the camp, the youth should complete an application at www.mdwfp.com/waterfowl and return it to MDWFP Youth Waterfowl Hunting and Education Camp, Attention: James Callicutt, 1505 Eastover Drive, Jackson, MS 39211 by December 21, 2011.  Allapplications will be ranked by the quality and content of the essays and youth will be notified if they were selected for the camp by December 23, 2011.
Prior hunting experience is not required to attend, however, a desire to learn about waterfowl, wetlands, and hunting is needed.  Meals and lodging will be provided for campers, and parents will be reimbursed for some travel expenses.  For more information about the Youth Waterfowl Hunting and Education Camp, contact James Callicutt at 601-432-2079.

Another day full of football

As someone who spent a majority of his life in Big 12 country, I have to admit that I was a little naïve four years ago when it came to SEC football.
Foolish me, I thought Texas and Oklahoma were better than teams like LSU, Alabama and Florida. Now, though, I’ve seen the light. Just so we’re clear though, I’ll still root for Texas or Oklahoma over any SEC school and will always say Alabama doesn’t win the 2009 national title if Colt McCoy doesn’t get hurt.
After moving to Mississippi in 2007, I quickly realized the SEC has more depth, in terms of quality teams. This weekend only confirms that belief.
If you’ve paid the least bit attention to college football the past month, you should know today features the biggest game of the year, maybe even century. No.1 LSU at No.2 Alabama has captured the attention of football fans since it became clear in early October those two squads were the best in the nation.
But there’s more to the SEC slate than that game in Tuscaloosa.  There’s No. 9 South Carolina at No. 7 Arkansas, Vanderbilt at Florida and Ole Miss at Kentucky (two bad teams can make a good game). Mississippi State and Georgia play out of conference games against Tennessee-Martin and New Mexico State, respectively.
Half of those are games I’d tune in to.
Now, compare that slate of games to, oh I don’t know, the Pac-12 that features three ranked teams traveling to unranked conference opponents, none of which are considered to be huge threats. Maybe Washington facing No.8 Oregon is a potential upset game, but I don’t believe that will happen.

LEXINGTON – Benton Academy’s sixth straight victory was really over before the halftime buzzer sounded.
The Raiders built a 33-point halftime lead and went on to defeat Central Holmes 39-0 with most of the starting lineup enjoying the game from the sidelines and resting up for the first round of the playoffs at DeSoto.
Kent Manor racked up 106 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries in just two quarters of play, and Bo Dickerson had a pair of touchdowns of his own.

For the second year in a row the Mavericks of Manchester Academy are in the playoffs. And also for the second time in as many years, they will face North Delta in the first round of the MAIS playoffs this Friday night after securing second place in district 2-AA with a 20-12 victory over Canton Academy.
“They have a good ball club, but we do too,” Manchester head coach Benny McLendon said.
In last year’s playoffs, North Delta shut out a Matt Peaster-led Mavericks 34-0. However, this year Manchester (8-3, 2-1) is led by a plethora of players and was on display at Buster Crawford Stadium last Friday.

A year after winning just one game and missing the playoffs, Yazoo County is officially headed to the playoffs as the third seed from district 4A-3 after defeating Indianola Gentry 38-18 last Friday night.
“Anytime you get a win headed into the playoffs is big,” Panthers first year head coach Bernard Euell said. “It creates confidence for the team.”
In the home finale Friday night, Michael Collum led the team in scoring with three touchdowns, two of which were passes to Devontea White. White and Collum connected on 47 and 10-yard passes. Collum also had a five yard rushing touchdown.
Junior Gerald Lampkin had a pair of rushing touchdowns against Indianola Gentry on runs of five and two yards.
“We’ve played pretty well these last few weeks, with the exception of Cleveland,” Euell said. “We’ve protected the ball better and that is the key to success for us.”
