Headed into the Friday night slate of games, the best team in 5A according to The Clarion Ledger rankings was Starkville. After Friday night, though, there was a need for a new number one as the Indians of Yazoo City knocked off Starkville 50-47.
Ladarius Drain hit two free throws in the final moments Friday night that tied the game at 47-47. After a quick score by the Indians, Jalen Grayer was sent to the charity stripe for a chance to put the game out of reach of Starkville.
Grayer made his first free throw but missed his second that gave Yazoo City a 50-47 lead.
Starkville had a chance at tying the in the final seconds but missed the shot as the buzzer sounded, allowing the Indians to return to Yazoo City with a 50-47 lead.
While Yazoo City found a way to win in Starkville, the Indians needed more late game magic three days later at the Lanier High School MLK Classic on Monday.
Headed into the fourth quarter, the Indians led Wingfield 44-39 after exchanging leads throughout the first three quarters. Yazoo City managed to extend its lead after neither squad scored a basket in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter with four points.

On a night full of last second wins and losses, Yazoo County added just one more buzzer beater Friday night.
Against Indianola Gentry, the Panthers led the entire first half, scoring nine points in the first and 13 in the second while holding the Rams to just eight points in each quarter. The strong showing in the first half for Yazoo County gave them a 22-16 lead at the halfway point.
However, the second half would be another story entirely.
Indianola came out in the second half on fire, scoring 16 points in the third quarter while the Panthers’ offense lost its spark with just six points.
Trailing by four points in the final quarter, Yazoo County responded with 16 points of their own. None bigger, however, than the final point that gave the Panthers a one-point edge in the final moments.
In the 44-42 victory, the Panthers were led by Jadauris Haymer with 18 points and Stephen Rucker had 12.
The next day against Madison Central, however, the Panthers struggled to find their offensive groove in a 53-22 defeat.
Madison Central opened the game with 11 points in the first quarter and 16 more in the second while holding Yazoo County to just five points in each of the first two quarters. The story wouldn’t change much in the second half as the Panthers opened the third quarter with just four points.

The game couldn’t have started off much better for the Lady Mavericks of Manchester Academy against Immanuel Christian Friday night. The Lady Mavs jumped out to a 13-4 lead after the first quarter, but it wouldn’t last as Immanuel Christian fought back to win 44-42, despite a last-second shot by Kaitlin Woods.
After Immanuel missed a pair of free throws with 27 seconds to go and a Manchester timeout, senior Maggie Hughes moved the ball up court but was immediately met by a pair of defenders. Hughes dumped the ball off to Woods next to Manchester’s bench and put up a three-point shot with a pair of defenders in her face. The shot bounced off the rim and was recovered by Immanuel to secure the 44-42 victory.
Woods, who scored the first points of the game with a three-point shot, finished with eight points. Senior Mary Moses Hitt led the Lady Mavs in scoring with 19 points and Hughes also had eight.

Powered by a 23-point effort by senior Jammie Jamison, the Mavericks jumped out to quick 14-9 lead after the first quarter and continued to stay ahead of Leake with a 15-point second quarter to lead 29-20 at halftime.
