KOSCIUSKO - Sometimes in sports all it takes is one mistake to decide a game. The Lady Panthers found that out the hard way last Thursday evening.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Kosciusko had a runner on second with two outs. A hit went towards Yazoo County’s second baseman, but she failed to corral it for the third out of the inning, allowing Kosciusko to score the game-winning run to win 4-3.
“We played a great game up until the bottom of the 4th inning,” Lady Panthers head coach Grant Andrews said. “We had them down and on the ropes. We shot ourselves in the foot and made two crucial errors to let Kosciusko back into the game. If we make one of those plays, there is no doubt we win the ball game because they were having a hard time hitting Catrina.”

Raiders blast Central Holmes

LEXINGTON - Jason Berry has been solid on the mound in his few appearances for Benton Academy this season. However, Monday night is what his head coach, Brent Woods, is calling his best performance of the season in a 13-3 victory against Central Holmes.
“He was on fire,” Woods said. “He looked really good. In his previous games, I don’t know if it was because it was so wet, but the ball was sticking to his hand longer than normal. He had good control of his curveball and other pitches, too.”
Berry recorded 10 strikeouts in his six innings of work while giving up just two hits, one of which was a check swing that made contact and went to right field.

Mavs come to life for win

When Monday night’s game between Manchester and Deer Creek began, the sun was still visible on the horizon. By the third inning, though, it was completely gone.
However, as the sun went down, the Mavericks got hot. Starting with the bottom of the third, Manchester scored three runs in each of the next four innings to close out a 12-3 victory over Deer Creek.
Despite the one-sided final score, it was Deer Creek who was hot when the first pitch was tossed. The Warriors got on the board first in the top of the second with an RBI double with two outs. With runners on third and second, though, Manchester’s Will Stonestreet struck out the sixth batter of the inning to escape with just one run allowed.
The next inning, Deer Creek took advantage of some wild pitches and walks to add two runs to their lead. Just like last time, though, Stonestreet got out of the inning with a strikeout.

It’s not like that with every team

The Mitchell ReportThe Mitchell ReportOne thing I learned very quickly was that when it comes to Mississippians’ favorite NFL team, there is nobody above the Saints. So, it shouldn’t be hard to imagine people across the state either dumping the loyalty, not believing what is being said is true or remaining the same.
Last Friday, the NFL released a document explaining how New Orleans had a “bounty” system put in place during the past three years that’s goal was to entice players to force opposing players out of games through injury.
We’ll probably see penalties handed down from the league’s office that are unprecedented to several, high ranking officials with the Saints, including head coach Sean Payton.
Some people (including my parents) say every other team in the league (especially the Forty-Niners) has a bounty system in place. Others don’t believe that. Personally, I believe as of Friday night, 31 other owners ordered for their bounty systems to be shut down and never spoken of again.
But for those parents who have kids playing football or are thinking about letting their kid play football, you should know it’s not like that everywhere.
I never once had a coach entice me to injure another player or take them out of the game. Nor did I hear that in junior high. I’ve never heard it at a little league game (and, yes, I coached that too) nor from anybody at a college.
Yes, football is a violent sport. Yes, people get hurt. That’s the chance you take. But nobody should attend a football game and see a big hit and think “wonder what he got for that one?”
It’s not like that everywhere you go.
