The 2012 baseball season hasn’t gone exactly how the Indians would have wanted, but at least one day went exactly as planned for Yazoo City.
On Saturday, the Indians hosted Lanier and Riverside for the first of two Yazoo City invitational’s. Yazoo City won both of its games Saturday, defeating Lanier 8-3 and Riverside 5-2.
The pair of victories doesn’t have an effect on the Indians’ district standings, but they still remain in the hunt for a playoff spot. Yazoo City currently sits third, but has a shot at second place if they can win one of two games Friday night at Neshoba Central.

The Yazoo City Indian tennis team dropped to 2-3 on the season following last week's 5-2 loss to the Starkville Yellowjackets.
The Indians are now 0-2 in district play after losing a close match to Neshoba Cental, 4-3. They have one district match remaining next week against the Canton Tigers.  
The Indians started the season off 2-0 with wins over Callaway and Pearl, before losing their next three matches to Neshoba, Ridgeland and Starkville. With five matches left on the schedule, the Indians have time to right the ship before heading into the district tournament.  
"It's been an up and down season but that was to be expected because we've got a lot of new faces this year," said YHS head coach Joffre Washington. "We're working on a shoestring budget with limited resources and some of the teams we play don't have that problem. But I have to play those kinds of teams to get the best competition for my kids. My kids welcome the challenge because they know that in order to be the best, you have to play the best. When you do that, your going to take some lumps, but the alternative is to not really get better."

Tyler George struck out 14 batters against Greenwood last week in a 5-1 victory that put Yazoo County into second place in the district.By TAYLOR MITCHELL

The Panthers of Yazoo County moved into second place in their district standings last week with a 5-2 victory over Greenwood.
Unfortunately, there would be no winning streak as the Panthers fell to Germantown, 13-3, on the road Saturday afternoon.
“We had some kids step up and fill in (against Greenwood) for some starters who were out,” Yazoo County head coach Corbin Ellis said. “This was a big game for us. It moves us into second place in the district and keeps our hopes alive for a district championship.”
The game didn’t start off as planned for Yazoo County against the Bulldogs. The Panthers committed an error in the top of the first that allowed Greenwood to take a 1-0 lead.

The Manchester Acaemy golf team won the Oak Hill Invitational played this past Monday in Columbus at Elm Lake Country Club. The Mavericks were led by Tyler Cartwright’s (above) score of 76 that was the third best score among all participants at the tournament. Matt Liddon also contributed to the victory with a score of 78. Cole Winstead and Gage Saxton scored a 79 and Palmer Coleman finished the day with an 82.
